Craggy Range Calvert Vineyard Pinot Noir is a single vineyard Pinot Noir from the Bannockburn in Central Otago. The vineyard is owned by Cromwell raised Owen Calvert. It is located on the northern side of Felton Road on a raised terrace above the Kawarau River. The vineyard has a north-east aspect and the soil is Bannockburn deep silt loam, a complex mixture of soil types, with a very good water retention capacity which is important throughout the dry Central Otago growing season. The vineyard was planted between 1999 and 2001 with a mixture of Dijon and two Pommard clones of Pinot Noir. The vineyard is biodynamically farmed. After harvest 10% of the grapes are fermented as whole bunch, 90% are destemmed. The wine is fermented in open top steel tanks. After fermention the Craggy Range Calvert Vineyard Pinot Noir is aged for 11 month in French oak barriques of which 30% are new.
