Domaine Jones Rouge Grenache Noir is a southern French red wine from the Languedoc Roussillon Wine Region. The 2016 is made mainly from Grenache Noir and is bottled as a Cotes Catalanes Indication Geographic Protegee (IGP).
The wine-making philosophy at Domaine Jones is to employ traditional, down–to-earth farming methods and innovative winemaking techniques to capture the characteristics of the terroir and the local area. Domaine Jones wines are only produced in tiny quantities – this truly is boutique wine-making. Katie Jones has recently acquired some more vineyards in the village of Tuchan and many of them are planted with low-yielding old vines with some up to 100 years old. The vineyards are planted with a mix of different grape varieties, co-planted in the same vineyard, a common way of planting in the early part of the last century. Katie Jones was originally working for a local wine co-operative when she fell in love with some old vine vineyards around the village of Tuchan in the department of Aude, not far from Maury. Katie initially made Domaine Jones Red (which became this wine, the Grenache Noir) and White (Grenache Gris) from her own vineyards and later purchased a vineyard in Fitou. Today she has even more projects including the Along Came Jones range.
The original Domaine Jones vineyard is situated in the shadow of Queribus Castle surrounded by wild scrub or garrigue, and consists of over 8000 vines on slopes of black schist planted with Carignan, Grenache Noir, Grenache Gris and Muscat. The vines here are predominantly over 70 years old. The vine age, altitude and stony, slate soils produce naturally very low-yielding vines. The lower the yield, the higher the quality. The wine-making philosophy at Domaine Jones is to employ traditional, down-to-earth farming methods and innovative winemaking techniques to capture the characteristics of the terroir and the local area.
The Cotes Catalanes IGP covers the same area as the Pyrénées-Orientales administrative department and is an IGP that encompasses wines made in the region outside of more specific appellations in the region such as Banyuls or Cotes du Roussillon.
Domaine Jones Grenache Noir 2016 is made mainly from old vine Grenache Noir with minimal oaking.
Domaine Jones Grenache Noir is a full-bodied red wine with rich and soft brambly fruit that is also delightfully pure and fresh thanks to minimal use of oak. There is lots of succulent, ripe, red and black fruit character (strawberries and raspberries) with a savoury, damson-y acidity, hints of black pepper spice, silky textured tannins and a lightness of touch that makes this red moreish-ly drinkable.
Try Domaine Jones Grenache Noir with a succulent steak, sausages, lamb chops, game pie or simply with pâté and cheese
