Miguel Torres Manso de Velasco Cabernet Sauvignon is 100% old vine Cabernet Sauvignon made using only grapes from vines that are over 115 years old. This premium Chilean red wine sits alongside the Miguel Torres’ Conde de Superunda as Miguel Torres Chile’s two top wines. Both are available to buy now at Fareham Wine Cellar.
Familia Torres Wines first acquired a small winery in Curicó, in the Chilean Central Valley, in 1979. It was the first foreign company to back Chilean vineyard production. After almost thirty years, those original 100 hectares have turned into 445 hectares of vineyards owned by the company itself. The excellent climate conditions for cultivating grape vines, with great temperature differences between night and day and lands free of grape phylloxera, have contributed to the fact that sublime wines are being made in lands from where one can view the greatness of the Andes, crowned by snow and noble beauty.
As of 2010, Miguel Torres Chile is directed by Miguel Torres Maczassek, a fifth-generation Torres winemaker who moved to Chile with his family to maintain the tradition and passion for winemaking that the Torres family has demonstrated for over a hundred years.
Miguel Torres was one of the first foreign investors to buy land in Chile, attracted by the special climatic conditions of this region. In 1979, Torres purchased one hundred hectares of vineyard and a winery in the Curicó area. With him, Miguel Torres brought his family’s long tradition of wine-making and over one hundred years of company history.
Miguel Torres Manso de Velasco pays homage to the former Governor of Chile, Manso de Velasco. A brave man and an entrepreneur, he was famous for his strength on the battlefield and was the founder of the city of Curicó, where these vineyards are located.
The wine was created in 1985 as the first high-end wine from Miguel Torres Chile, a Vino de Pago (single vineyard wine) that introduced concepts such as ageing in new oak barrels and the bottle. It has become known as one of the few high-quality Chilean Cabernet Sauvignons produced outside of the Maipo Valley.
Miguel Torres Manso de Velasco Cabernet Sauvignon is a single-vineyard wine. The vineyard is located some 50 miles from the coast in the municipality of Molina and was acquired by Torres in 1984. The 3.6 hectares are dedicated almost entirely to Cabernet Sauvignon vines and the grapes come from old vines over 115 years old.
The soil has a loamy / sandy texture with a high percentage of different-sized pebbles. It has little organic matter and is not very fertile. The old vine Cabernet Sauvignon grown here produces small quantities of small berries, resulting in concentrated, intense and dark wine. The area has a warm, sub-humid climate, with very cold nights, according to its bioclimatic indices. The influence of the Andes, only 8 miles away, can be felt at night, when the temperature drops close to freezing point.
Intense, dark ruby colour. Exquisite aroma with classical notes of wild fruit preserves, blackberries, and hints of leather. On the palate it has great elegance, with smooth tannins and a prolonged fruit and spicy aftertaste that finalises with notes of toasted bread.
This is a bold and structured Chilean red wine with rich black fruit, spice, and firm tannins. It pairs beautifully with hearty, savoury dishes. Try it with roast or grilled red meats and game. Enjoy it with grilled ribeye steak, slow-roasted lamb shank, or a mushroom and truffle risotto to complement its depth and intensity.
For a vegetarian option, try charred eggplant with a smoky tomato sauce.
