Description

Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is an organic, estate-grown red wine made with grapes grown mainly at Grgich’s Yountville vineyard, with more fruit from their Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards. It is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.

History of Grgich Hills Estate

Grgich Hills Estate is a renowned winery located in Rutherford in the heart of the Napa Valley. The winery was founded in 1977 by Croatian-American winemaker Miljenko “Mike” Grgich and Austin Hills (of Hills Brothers Coffee) with the mission to produce world-class wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Grgich became famous after a Chardonnay he produced at Chateau Montelena won first prize among the white wines at the historic Paris Wine Tasting of 1976. Today, Mike’s daughter, Violet Grgich, is President and Ivo Jeramaz, Mike’s nephew, is Winemaker / VP of Vineyards & Production. They have recently been joined by the third-generation Justin Hills and Maya Jeramaz.

A Move to Estate-Grown Fruit

The winery was previously known as Grgich Hills Cellar until 2006 when the name was changed to reflect the fact that the company only uses estate-grown fruit. Today the winery has 5 different vineyards covering some 366 acres in Calistoga, Rutherford, American Canyon, Carneros and Yountville. Grgich farms all of their certified organic vineyards naturally without artificial fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides, using the principles of regenerative agriculture.

Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Winemaking

The grapes for the Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon are sourced principally from the estate’s Yountville vineyard, with grapes from the Rutherford and Calistoga vineyards rounding out the blend. The result is a full-bodied, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with pure flavours and a pronounced sense of place.

The grapes are fermented using indigenous yeast with a period of four weeks of skin contact. The wine is matured for 20 months in 100% French oak.

The 2020 is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot.

Tasting Notes

Grgich Hills Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon opens with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, sweet blackcurrant and ripe black cherry, supported by hints of vanilla and sandalwood. The flavours on the palate are of fresh, red and black berry fruit accompanied by hints of rosemary and violets. The richness of the fruit is balanced with a bright acidity and soft, smooth tannins, leading to a long and vibrant finish.
