Description

Robert Oatley Finisterre Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes grown in the Margaret River wine-growing region of Western Australia. It is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Robert Oatley Vineyards was founded by wine industry legend Bob Oatley in 2006, has vineyards in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Sadly Bob Oatley died in January 2016 but his son Sandy has taken the helm and the company remains in safe hands. He is ably assisted by Chris Hancock, the Deputy Executive Chairman who has been working for Robert Oatley for 40 years (he also makes some good wines under the Hancock & Hancock label including an excellent Cabernet / Touriga Nacional and a Fiano). Director of Wine-making, Larry Cherubino is one of Australia’s most awarded wine makers and has made vintages all over the world. Under his guidance, Robert Oatley Vineyards has identified some of the best vineyards in their respective regions that show a true sense of the land.

Robert Oatley Finisterre

The Robert Oatley Finisterre range is a premium range of wines which focus on specific sites within some of Australia’s best regions and sub-regions. The wines are only made in small quantities. The range comprises a Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay, a Great South Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah and a Denmark Pinot Noir. Finisterre translates as “Ends of the Earth”.

The grapes for the Robert Oatley Finisterre Cabernet Sauvignon come from a single vineyard located in Wilyabrup in the Margaret River winegrowing region. The vines have an average age of 18 years old and are grown on vertical trellises on laterite (gravel / loam) soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit is hand-harvested with a berry selection in order to select only the best grapes. Fermentation is done with a wide range of yeasts and there is a three week primary post-ferment maceration. The wine was matured for 12 months in a combination of new and old French oak barriques.

The winemaker is Larry Cherubino.

Tasting Notes

Robert Oatley Finisterre Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River pours a deep crimson with purple hints, revealing a lifted nose of cassis, blackberries, and mint, accented by vanilla and subtle tobacco leaf. On the palate, it’s smooth and medium-to-full bodied, offering juicy cherry and blackcurrant flavours with savoury peppercorn and cedar notes, framed by fine, powdery tannins and a touch of sweetness for a velvety feel. The finish is long and vibrant, with lingering red fruit and fresh acidity

Food Pairing

Matches perfectly with a sirloin or ribeye steak, grilled portobello mushrooms or mature cheddar.
