St. Helena Estate Single Vineyard Merlot Selection is made from 100% Merlot grapes sourced from the Marlborough winegrowing region of New Zealand. St. Helena only make their single vineyard wines in good vintages.
Sitting just north of the City of Christchurch in the rich tapestry of New Zealand’s Canterbury wine growing region is the St Helena Wine Estate. Founded in 1978 by the Mundy family, the vineyard takes maximum advantage of the region’s long, warm summers and dry autumns. Canterbury is an ideal climate for producing some of the best premium grapes the Southern Hemisphere has to offer. The result is a stunning selection of wines produced from the winery’s 20 hectare estate. As well as wines from Canterbury, the estate also has contracts with growers in Marlborough for premium quality Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer grapes. As well as St Helena wines, the company also produce the ENZED and Flying Kiwi brands.
In fact, St Helena is acknowledged as the pioneer in establishing premium Pinot Noir for New Zealand. Owners Robin and Bernice Mundy and award-winning winemaker Alan McCorkindale are passionate in their dedication to producing exceptional fruit and wines from the vineyard and the continuing development of Canterbury as one of New Zealand’s finest wine-producing regions.
St.Helena Single Vineyard Merlot from Marlborough is an exquisite wine with a rich ruby colour. Succulent berry fruit and chocolate berry aromas combine with black plum. spicy vanilla and gamey characters on the palate to produce this full-bodied wine with complex tannins and a long finish. It can be enjoyed now or will develop with extended cellaring.
Marlborough Merlot offers a distinctive take on this classic varietal. Grown in the region’s sunny, cool-climate conditions with well-drained soils, Marlborough Merlots typically exhibit ripe plum and dark berry flavours, often accented by subtle spice and herbaceous undertones. While less famous than the region’s Sauvignon Blancs, these wines are smooth, medium-bodied, and approachable, with soft tannins and a balanced structure, making them a versatile choice for casual sipping or pairing with hearty dishes.
