St Johns Wine Optimus The Terraces Block 2 Shiraz is a red wine from the Blackwood Valley wine-growing region of Western Australia. In addition to this very limited Shiraz, the company also produces the Optimus The Terraces Chardonnay and the Optimus The Terraces Cabernet Sauvignon.
St. Johns Wines, established in 1997, is a Western Australian wine company that produces premium wines from vineyards in Margaret River and Blackwood Valley. The Bosveld family group bought the vineyards in 2020 and brought considerable wine industry experience. The company’s vineyard holdings include the St. Johns Vineyard, a significant 40-hectare plantation situated in the heart of the Margaret River wine region, and St. Johns Brook, a mature vineyard spanning approximately 60 hectares in Yelverton, which was established in 1998. St Johns Wine is also a partner at the purpose-built St. Johns Brook vineyard winery with its barrel hall stocked with a wide selection of the finest oak barrels, enabling the crafting of exceptional wines in the region. This wine was originally produced by the Latitude 34 Wine Co, formally known as Barwick Wines, which was acquired by St Johns Vineyards in 2020.
The Shiraz fruit for the St Johns Wine Optimus The Terraces Block 2 Shiraz come from the Blackwood Valley. The Blackwood Valley wine-growing region is a hidden secret of Margaret River. It is located between the Margaret River and the Great Southern Wine Regions in the southwest of Western Australia and includes some 450 hectares of vineyards spread across some 15 producers. The area includes the historic settlements of Boyup Brook, Bridgetown, Balingup and Nannup. The St Johns Blackwood Valley’s Tweed River vineyard was established in 1997 and covers over 60 hectares which makes them the largest producer in the region. The main grape varieties planted here are Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Chardonnay, grown on various sloped sites within our vineyard to ensure the best-growing conditions for each variety. There are also small blocks of unique varieties such as Malbec, Tempranillo, Vermentino and Grenache used for their small batch, Round Puzzle wines. St Johns notes that their Blackwood Valley vineyard has a tendency to produce smaller berries, more fruit intensity, deeper colours and concentrated flavours.
St Johns Wine Optimus The Terraces Block 2 Shiraz is 100% Shiraz. Only 3600 bottles were produced.
“Opt-ti-mus comes from the Latin word “the very best”. It’s our very best of the best. Only produced from the very best fruit of our oldest vineyard blocks, hand-picked, hand-plunged, and only made in the year when the fruit is exceptional.”
This is a deep, dark wine with serious fruit concentration. It has dominant flavours of plum, cherry, and blackberry which are complemented by underlying notes of mocha, liquorice, and spice. The oak is expertly integrated, adding depth without overpowering the fruit, and the finish is marked by velvety smooth tannins.
