Description

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon 100% Napa Valley fruit. Artemis is made with non-estate fruit, sourced from a select few Napa Valley vineyards, with some estate fruit.  The wine forms part of a trio of wines in the “Napa Valley Collection” alongside the Karia Chardonnay and Aveta Sauvignon Blanc. This range of wines expresses both regional character alongside the signature style of Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars.

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, founded in 1970

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars was established by Warren Winiarski in 1970, located at the end of the Silverado Trail, in what is now known as the Stag’s Leap District. The 44-acre property was then a prune orchard and was replanted with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Merlot. It remained in the Winiarski family when, in 2007, it was sold to Chateau Ste. Michelle and Marchese Antinori Srl (famous for their joint ventures and wine-making in Washington State and Italy, respectively). Under winemaker Marcus Notaro, the focus is on balance, complexity, and terroir-driven wines, crafted with meticulous attention to detail

The 1976 Judgment of Paris

The company gained international recognition when its 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won first place at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, outperforming top Bordeaux wines in a blind tasting, a wine tasting which put Napa Valley’s wines on the map, earning them an enviable, global reputation.

Stags Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Profile

The fruit for this wine comes from a selection of fruit grown for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars by independent growers from across the Napa Valley, including: 51% Atlas Peak District; 14% Battuello Vineyard in St. Helena, 12% Arcadia Vineyard in Coombsville and 5% Twin Creeks Vineyard in Wooden Valley, along with some grapes from the Stags Leap District. Each site lends its personality to the aroma, flavour, structure and texture of the finished wine.

  • Blend: 2021 Artemis is a blend of 98% Cabernet Sauvignon, 1% Cabernet Franc, 0.5% Malbec, 0.5% Merlot

  • Aging: 15 months in French oak barrels (33% new, 67% older)

  • Filtration: Very lightly filtered at bottling

Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon is a great example of the skill of the blender, taking wine from different sources and producing a wine with both SLWC style and Napa Valley character.

Why is it called Artemis?

This premium Californian red wine is named after Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, reflecting the winery’s pursuit of Napa Valley’s best grapes.

Tasting Notes

Artemis Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 offers inviting aromas of boysenberry, plum, currant, chocolate, and baking spice, with a rich and creamy entrance leading to a fresh and flavorful mid-palate. This supple but structured wine, sourced from various parts of the valley, still captures the gentle power of the Stags Leap District. Suave oak spices, rich dark fruit, and a full body give a generous, broad feel that is nicely freshened by fine-grained tannins, while the wine is full-bodied with rich fruit flavours and integrated tannins that are persistent and plush.

Food Pairing

Enjoy this premium Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon with grilled ribeye streak, braised short ribs, or pasta with wild mushrooms and prosciutto.
