Wild Rock Merlot is produced by Capricorn Wine Estates in Hawke’s Bay on New Zealand’s North Island. The region of Hawke’s Bay has a range of diverse and varied soil types and microclimates and different grape varieties prosper in various terroirs. The Gimblett Gravels wine growing district, located on an old dried up riverbed on a valley floor, is one of the warmest growing regions in New Zealand and it is from here that Wild Rock sources their Merlot, as well as other red grape varieties including Syrah and Malbec. Wild Rock Wine employs some key sustainable practices far above the New Zealand requirements – they have a nil residue chemical programme, winery heat recovery system, biological waste water treatment plant, ambient barrel hall cooling system and they use composting and cover crop in the vineyard. Wild Rock Merlot is a blend of 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 1% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.
