Description

Pruno Nero Lambrusco di Modena Spumante is a dry, sparkling red wine from Modena, the home of Ferrari and Maserati in the Italian region of Emilia Romagna. This is made from 100% Lambrusco grapes, but you can forget about the dodgy Lambruscos of the 1990s; this is the real deal.

Cleto Chiarli, Since 1860

Cleto Chiarli started his winemaking business in 1860 and has become known as one of the top producers of Lambrusco wines. Cleto Chiarli own three different wine estates, which comprise over 100 hectares of vineyards, which are Tenuta Sozzigalli, Tenuta Cialdini and Tenuta Belvedere.

The grapes for Cleto Chiarli’s Pruno Nero come from the last of these Tenuta Belvedere. Belvedere lies in the Spilamberto municipality which is one of the most important agricultural centres in Modena province and is one of the best areas for growing Lambrusco Grasparossa.

The estate comprises 50 acres of vineyards on flat, fertile vineyards with high-density planting and care vineyard management, which are key ingredients to producing good quality Lambrusco Grasparossa grapes with good vinosity and tannins. Grasparossa tends to produce the more tannic wines than other Lambrusco varieties.

Pruno Nero Lambrusco di Modena Spumante Winemaking

After harvest, the grapes are soft pressed with a maceration at around 10 to 12C. Pruno Nero Lambrusco di Modena Spumante undergoes a first natural fermentation with added yeasts followed by a long secondary fermentation (“Pris de Mousse) in pressurised stainless steel vats. This is known as the Charmat Method, which is most commonly used for Prosecco.

Serve this sparkling red wine well chilled.

Tasting Notes

  • Appearance: Intense / deep ruby red c to inky purple or garnet colour, with a brilliant hue and abundant, lively, persistent mousse.
  • Aroma: Marked and keen fruity profile with prominent fruits like black cherry, morello cherry, blackberry, sour plum/prune, wild berries, and marasca cherry. Layered with floral notes (violet, lavender), herbal touches (mint, thyme, pine forest, vegetal hints), and subtle spice or cocoa in some vintages.
  • Palate: Strong structure yet soft and velvety/smooth, with a round, creamy texture from the bubbles. Flavours echo the nose: tart dark fruits (black cherry, blackberry, sour plum), firm and structured with mouthwatering acidity for freshness and balance. It’s vinous and full-bodied for a sparkling wine, with soft tannins, a slight bitterness on the finish and good persistence.

Food Pairing

Serve well-chilled (8-10°C) as an aperitif, with charcuterie, pasta with meat or mushroom sauces, grilled meats or pizza. It’s versatile and great for summer sipping or festive occasions.
