Description

Beyra Reserva Quartz is a white wine from the Beira Interior DOC. It is produced by winemaker Rui Roboredo Madeira and is a blend of Fonte Cal and Siria grapes.

Rui Roboredo Madeira’s family hails from the Douro and Rui himself has been making wines for over 20 years. As well as producing wine in the Douro, he also produces wine in the lesser-known wine-growing region of Beira Interior and believes in showcasing the authenticity of terroir and local grape varieties. The “Beyra” project began at the old Vermioso Winery (which was completely rebuilt) in 2011 with the aim of introducing the concept of “Altitude Wines” to the region. 10 hectares of vineyards were planted in 2012 and these are “Among the highest vineyards of Portugal”.

The Fonte Cal and Siria grapes for the Beyra Reserva Quartz come from very old vines situated at 725 metres above sea level, very close to the Spanish border, south of the Douro, and are grown on granite with high amounts of Silex. The vineyards are all of native varieties that are perfectly adapted to the environmental and climatic characteristics created by the altitude. The Fonte Cal and Siria grapes are hand picked, carefully selected and destemmed, whole cluster pressed and fermented at 16-17 ºC using native yeasts for 20 days. The wine is completely unoaked and is aged for 6 months in bottle prior to release.

The blend of Beyra Reserva Quartz is 60% Fonte Cal and 40% Siria.
