Doran Vineyards Chenin Blanc Reserve is a premium oak-aged South African Chenin Blanc made from Doran’s new plantings, with the 2023 vintage marking its first release. Elegant, textured, and expressive, it combines the freshness and fruit purity of Chenin Blanc with subtle oak complexity, making it a standout white wine for lovers of refined South African wine.
Doran Vineyards is located at Far Horizons Farm in the Voor-Paardeberg wine terroir, between Paarl and Riebeek Kasteel. The Voor-Paardeberg is a small but respected wine-growing area within the Paarl wine district, awarded its Wine of Origin status in 2006. Wellington is the nearest town, just 15 minutes away. The region experiences a very hot, dry climate, with little summer rainfall, making dry farming common, while Atlantic sea breezes help to moderate the intense heat.
Doran Vineyards was founded by Irishman Edwin Doran, who began visiting South Africa in 1981 before building a successful travel business centred on sports tours to the country. He sold the business to TUI Travel Plc in 2008. In 2010, he purchased Far Horizons Farm with his partner Andre Badenhorst, and they soon launched a R50 million investment programme across the 179-hectare estate. The farm is also run as a mixed agricultural property, with arable land, Aberdeen Angus cattle, and ÃŽle-de-France sheep.
Vines had already been planted on the farm in 1995, beginning with five red grape varieties, including Pinotage and Syrah. Grenache and Durif were later added, followed by three white varieties: Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, and Roussanne, which were established in 2011.
In 2019, Edwin’s son Tom joined the company, continuing the family’s involvement in the business.
Appearance:Â Pale straw with bright, youthful green hues.
Nose: The bouquet is expressive and fruit-forward, offering a delicate floral character intertwined with aromas of ripe apple, fresh citrus (lemon / lime), and a distinct note of honey.
Palate: This is a full-bodied, yet elegant white wine. The entry is clean and crisp, with flavours of stone fruit and quince following the nose. Despite the hot, dry climate of the Voor-Paardeberg, the wine retains lovely freshness and a chalky, lingering mouthfeel.Â
Finish: Long and smooth, leaving notes of ripe citrus and honey on the finish.
The Doran Vineyards Chenin Blanc Reserve pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, grilled fish like snoek, pork tenderloin, creamy pasta, and goat’s cheese salads. It also complements mildly spicy Asian dishes, sushi, and soft cheeses such as Brie or Comté.
Serve well-chilled between 8–12°C.
