Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Sauvignon Blanc is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes are selected from exceptional quality single vineyards on the farm. It is Kleine Zalze’s flagship range and also includes a Shiraz and a superb Chenin Blanc.
Kleine Zalze is a a South African winery situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands and the history of winemaking there can be traced back as far as 1695. However, the modern history of the estate began when Kobus Basson and his family bought the property in 1996, and there was a large stride forward. In 1996 the estate was scientifically mapped to find the best terroir for different grape varieties and seventeen years of subsequent investment have seen Kleine Zalze become one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa. In September 2022 ownership passed to French-owned AdVini, a world-renowned French wine company, thereby beginning a new chapter for Kleine Zalze Wines.
The winery achieved new heights in 2020 by being named Top Performing Winery of the Year by Platter’s South African Wine Guide, which is the South African bible. More recently, Kleine Zalze won four Double Golds and the Best Achiever award at the highly acclaimed Veritas Awards 2022.
The 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes for this wine are sourced from selected vineyards in Stellenbosch (False Bay), Durbanville and Darling. The grapes were handpicked early in the morning and in some cases even during the night. Kleine Zalze handles the Sauvignon Blanc very reductively from the start with dry ice in the vineyard through to the fermentation vessel. The grapes were crushed as soon as they arrived (before 10 am) with a CO2 blanket and given at least 12 hours of skin contact. This was to extract all the beautiful flavours nestled in the skins. The juice was racked from the skins with gravity and settled for 24 hours. The clean juice was racked to the fermentation vessel where it is inoculated with selected yeast strains and fermented very slowly at 13 degrees Celsius. The wine spends 7 months on primary lees before being bottled with only a very coarse filtration.
This wine is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
