Description

Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz is made from 100% Shiraz grapes selected from the winery’s exceptional Shiraz plantings. The Kleine Zalze Family Reserve range of wines is the winery’s flagship range which also includes a Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. Only the best oak barrels are used for maturation and special attention is given throughout the wine-making process. It is bottled as a Wine of Origin Stellebosch.

History of Kleine Zalze Wines

Kleine Zalze Wines is a South African winery in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The history of winemaking can be traced back as far as 1695. However, the modern history of the estate began when Kobus Basson and his family bought the property in 1996, and there was a large stride forward. In 1996 the estate was scientifically mapped to find the best terroir for different grape varieties and seventeen years of subsequent investment have seen Kleine Zalze become one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa. In September 2022 ownership passed to French-owned AdVini, a world-renowned French wine company, thereby beginning a new chapter for Kleine Zalze Wines. They produce a range of wines from the Cellar Selection up to the very limited edition Project Z wines.

A Multi Award-Winning Winery

The winery achieved new heights in 2020 by being named Top Performing Winery of the Year by Platter’s South African Wine Guide, which is the South African bible. More recently, Kleine Zalze won four Double Golds and the Best Achiever award at the highly acclaimed Veritas Awards 2022.

Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz Winemaking

The grapes for the Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz were sourced from the farm at Kleine Zalze itself with some also coming from their farm at Faure farm. The 100% Shiraz grapes were manually harvested early in the morning, de-stemmed and sorted before being transferred to stainless steel tank for fermentation. In some batches, up to 15% ripe stems were added back into the fermentation vessel to intensify the peppery aromas Shiraz is well-known for. The superb structure in the wine was achieved through a combination of open and closed pump-overs and careful monitoring to ensure the best balance possible. Maturation took place for 22 months in 65% new French oak barrels.

This wine is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

Tasting Notes

From Kleine Zalze:

“A great example of what this cultivar is capable of in Stellenbosch. A bouquet of ripe red fruits is underpinned by savoury notes and hints of black pepper. These flavours follow on the palate, which is intense and powerful upfront, with a well-rounded mouthfeel. Fine-grained tannins and freshness provide a long aftertaste underpinned by flavours of French oak. With both savoury and fruit notes this wine is a very versatile wine to enjoy with food, but be assured the intense flavours and elegant tannin structure will ensure that one will be well rewarded by cellaring this wine carefully for up to 10 years.”

Food Pairing

Kleine Zalze Family Reserve Shiraz pairs very well with grilled or roasted red meats like lamb chops, beef tenderloin or a juicy steak. Barbecue ribs or smoked brisket also enhance its spicy undertones. For a vegetarian option, try it with a mushroom stroganoff, risotto or a spiced lentil stew.
