Louis Guntrum Nierstein Hipping Riesling Auslese is a sweet white German Riesling from the Rheinhessen. The vineyard of Hipping extends along the Rhine north of Nierstein and south of Nackenheim and covers some 23 hectares (57 acres). The vineyards are an integral part of the Red Hill vineyards (“Roter Hang“) in Nierstein.
The Louis Guntrum Estate, which was established 1648. However, it was in 1909 that Louis Guntrum returned to the left bank of the Rhein River and settled in Nierstein. Today, the estate is in the hands of the 11th generation of the Guntrum family, Konstantin Guntrum and his wife Stephanie, since 2003 and includes some of the best vineyard sites in Nierstein and Oppenheim. The estate benefits from the region’s unique microclimate. The diverse terroir and vineyards boast a combination of nutrient-rich soils, gentle slopes, and abundant sunshine, creating an ideal environment for cultivating exceptional grapes. Louis Guntrum specializes in the production of Riesling but they also produce Gewurztraminer, Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Sekt, amognst others and the wines are exported to over 50 countries.
Louis Guntrum take various measures in the vineyard, reduced pruning, defoliage and green harvest, to ensure a good harvest. They also only use very limited and strictly monitored fertilizers and chemicals. Made only from carefully selected over-ripe grapes which undergo a gentle pressing followed by temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
The vines for the production of Louis Guntrum Nierstein Hipping Riesling Auslese are over 40 years old. They are planted on steep slopes overlooking the River Rhine at up to 50 gradient and achieve a naturally limited yield of only 30 hl/ha. The soils are red composed of red sandtone. The grapes are hand harvested and undergo a gentle pressing, temperature controlled fermentation in stainless steel at around 16 C, ageing on the lees.
Louis Guntrum Nierstein Hipping Riesling Auslese has complex aromas with fine lychee aromas and ripe tropical notes. The wine has a full, dense structure with balanced sweetness and elegant acidity. Great complexity and length
