Louis Guntrum Nierstein Oelberg Riesling Trocken is a dry German Riesling from the Rheinehessen wine-growing region of Germany.
The Louis Guntrum Estate was established in 1648. However, it was in 1909 that Louis Guntrum returned to the left bank of the Rhein River and settled in Nierstein. Today, the estate is in the hands of the 11th generation of the Guntrum family, Konstantin Guntrum and his wife Stephanie, since 2003 and includes some of the best vineyard sites in Nierstein and Oppenheim. The estate benefits from the region’s unique microclimate. The diverse terroir and vineyards boast a combination of nutrient-rich soils, gentle slopes, and abundant sunshine, creating an ideal environment for cultivating exceptional grapes. Louis Guntrum specializes in the production of Riesling but they also produce Gewurztraminer, Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Sekt, among others and the wines are exported to over 50 countries.
Louis Guntrum takes various measures in the vineyard, reduced pruning, defoliage and green harvest, to ensure a good harvest. They also only use very limited and strictly monitored fertilizers and chemicals. Made only from carefully selected over-ripe grapes which undergo a gentle pressing followed by temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks.
The grapes for the Louis Guntrum Nierstein Oelberg Riesling Trocken come from the site of a former monastery, which perhaps accounts for the slightly biblical-sounding name, “Oelberg” translates as “Mount of Olives”. The vines here were planted in 1993 on Rotliegend (red clay slate) soils and the vineyards have a southern exposure. It is considered to be one of the best sites in the Nierstein.
Louis Guntrum Nierstein Oelberg Riesling Trocken is a dry wine with mineral, citrus, and green apple flavours. There are lemon, and green fruit, plus herbal hints. It’s crisp and acidic, with a medium body and a dry, lingering finish.
Louis Guntrum Nierstein Oelberg Riesling Trocken, with its dry, mineral-driven profile, is excellent with seafood like grilled fish and shellfish, poultry, pork, and grilled vegetables.
It complements dishes with herbs, citrus, or roasted root vegetables, and pairs well with aged cheeses and charcuterie. It’s crisp acidity and minerality make it a versatile choice for savoury meals.
