Description

Louis Guntrum Oppenheim Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese is a semi-sweet German white wine from the Rheinhessen wine-growing region. It is made only from carefully selected over-ripe grapes. If you’re looking for a high-quality German Riesling with a little sweetness but not cloying, this would be a very good choice.

Louis Guntrum, for 11 Generations

Historically, the Louis Guntrum Estate was first established in 1648. However, it was in 1909 that Louis Guntrum returned to the left bank of the Rhein River and settled in Nierstein. Since 2003, the estate has been in the hands of the 11th generation of the Guntrum family, Konstantin Guntrum and his wife Stephanie, and now includes some of the best vineyard sites in Nierstein and Oppenheim.

The estate benefits from the region’s unique microclimate. The diverse terroir and vineyards boast a combination of nutrient-rich soils, gentle slopes, and abundant sunshine, creating an ideal environment for cultivating exceptional grapes. Louis Guntrum specialises in the production of Riesling but they also produce Gewurztraminer, Dornfelder, Pinot Noir and Sekt, amongst others, and the wines are exported to over 50 countries.

The Oppenheim Herrenberg Vineyard

The Herrenberg Vineyard (Herr = Lord, Berg = Mountain) is a well-protected vineyard nestling in a horseshoe-shaped hillside. Oppenheim Herrenberg is classified as a “Grosse Lage” by the VDP. Grosse Lage is a designation given to the highest quality German vineyards. It can be thought is as a “Grand Cru” equivalent. The best wines grow in these sites, developing complex flavours, expressive terroir character and enhanced ripening potential. One of the exceptional vineyards in Oppenheim and Rheinhessen.

Louis Guntrum has around 29 hectares of vineyards in Oppenheim Herrenberg, which are situated on east to southeast slopes. The soils are clay, loess, limestone, sandy to stony and clayey loam with excellent water retention. Louis Guntrum undertakes various measures in the vineyard, reduced pruning, defoliation and green harvest, to ensure a good harvest. They also only use very limited and strictly monitored fertilisers and chemicals.

Tasting Notes

Great complexity, nuances of mango and pineapple. Juicy, intense flavours, paired with a delicate sweetness, richness and structure.

Food Pairing

A Spätlese Riesling’s sweetness and acidity make it a versatile pairing partner. For a lighter option, consider dishes with fruit or spice, such as roasted chicken with apricot glaze or Thai curry.

If you prefer something more substantial, a Spätlese Riesling can complement rich foods like roasted pork with apple sauce or blue cheese. The wine’s acidity cuts through the richness, while its sweetness enhances the flavours of the dish.

WineWiki

What is a Spätlese Wine?

A Spätlese is a German wine made from grapes that are harvested later than usual, allowing them to ripen fully and develop higher sugar content. Riesling is the most common grape used for Spätlese, known for its elegant and aromatic qualities.

Spätlese Rieslings are typically semi-sweet, with a balance of sweetness and acidity. They often exhibit complex aromas of ripe fruits, such as apricot, peach, and honey. Despite the sweetness, Spätlese wines retain a refreshing acidity that balances the sweetness.
