Marc Brédif Vouvray Grande Année 1994 is a sublime 100% Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. This very special limited release is part of a range of library vintages that Bredif release to the market every so often.
Marc Brédif, with its majestic cellars in the heart of the Touraine, has been one of the most famous Vouvray and Chinon houses since 1893. When Baron Patrick de Ladoucette took over the house in 1980, he breathed new life into the century-old winery, while preserving its traditions.
Today, Marc Brédif continues to produce Vouvray and Chinon wines of the finest quality. The history of the wines of Vouvray is directly linked to the religious history of Touraine. From the 4th century onwards, the monks owned most of the vineyards, including the best growths. The cellars of Marc Brédif are among the biggest and most beautiful of the appellation and the digging of the Tuffé hillsides to make them began in the 8th century.
The fruit for the Marc Brédif Vouvray Grande Année 1994 was sourced from the vineyards of Vignes Blanches, Tabourneau and Mialet, growing on the slopes next to the banks of the River Loire, in the communes of Vouvray and Vernou-sur-Brenne.
The vineyards enjoy a Northern/Southern exposure. and the soils are mainly chalk clay, with some parcels having flint clay soils. The vineyards are 25-70 years old on average.
This is a rich, off-dry Vouvray is excellent, packed with lots of sweet, honeyed, spicy notes yet with amazingly fresh acidity. This acidity is what allows the wine to maintain its freshness and structure over extended periods of ageing. For a wine that is 30+ years old, it is very youthful. Some vintages are noble rot affected.
Appearance: Deep golden hue
Nose: Complex and tertiary, with aromas of honey, quince paste, dried apricots, candied citrus peel, and subtle notes of toasted nuts, truffle, and wet wool/lanolin – classic signs of aged Chenin Blanc.
Palate: Off-dry to demi-sec (medium-sweet), full-bodied yet vibrant, balanced by lively acidity that keeps it fresh. Flavours of lime marmalade, baked apple, honeyed stone fruits, and mineral chalkiness unfold in layers, with a smoky depth and excellent concentration. The finish is long, elegant, and very well-balanced.
Serve as an aperitif. It will match well with white meats, roast chicken or pork.
Try with mild creamy cheeses such as Brie, Camembert or Tomme.
