Robert Oatley Signature Series Riesling is made from grapes sourced from the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. The Signature Series of wines follows Bob Oatley’s mantra that all wines should be a “darned good drink”.
Robert Oatley Vineyards, was founded by wine industry legend Bob Oatley in 2006, has vineyards in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria, where this wine comes from. Sadly Bob Oatley died in January 2016 but his son Sandy has taken the helm and the company remains in safe hands. He is ably assisted by Chris Hancock, the Deputy Executive Chairman who has been working for Robert Oatley for 40 years (he also makes some good wines under the Hancock & Hancock label including an excellent Cabernet / Touriga Nacional and a Fiano). Director of Winemaking, Larry Cherubino is one of Australia’s most awarded wine makers and has made vintages all over the world. Under his guidance Robert Oatley Vineyards has identified some of the best vineyards in their respective regions that show a true sense of the land. The Signature Series embodies the grape varietal and region in which it was grown.
The grapes for Oatley’s wines come from various key vineyard regions across Australia from both vineyards that the family own and from select growers with whom they work in long term partnerships. They also own three wineries in Mudgee, McLaren Vale and Margaret River (where Larry Cherubino is based).
As mentioned above, the 100% Riesling grapes for the Robert Oatley Signature Series Riesling come from the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia, a region that encompasses the Pongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Denmark and Frankland River sub-regions. This wine is made from a number of individual parcels of free-run juice from Porongorup, Frankland River and Mount Barker which are fermented with neutral yeast to retain the inherent fruit characters. The wine is made with minimal intervention to produce a varietally pure, excellent early to mid-term drinking wine.
