Robert Oatley Signature Series Riesling is made from grapes sourced from the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. The Signature Series of wines follows Bob Oatley’s original winemaking mantra that all wines should be a “darned good drink”!
Robert Oatley Vineyards, established in 2006 by the wine industry legend and yachtsman Bob Oatley. The company has vineyards across Western Australia in Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. Bob Oatley passed away in January 2016, but his legacy continues under the leadership of his son, Sandy, who now steers the company with confidence. Sandy is ably assisted by another Australian winemaking legend, Chris Hancock, the Deputy Executive Chairman, who has dedicated 40 years to Robert Oatley Vineyards and also crafts impressive wines under his own Hancock & Hancock label, including a fantastic Cabernet / Touriga Nacional blend and a great Fiano. The winery’s Director of Winemaking, Larry Cherubino, is among Australia’s most celebrated winemakers, with a global reputation for excellence. Under his expertise, Robert Oatley Vineyards has pinpointed exceptional vineyards in each region, reflecting the unique character of the land. The Signature Series highlights the essence of both the grape variety and its regional origin. As well as this Great Southern Riesling, the Signature Series also includes a Yarra Pinot Noir, Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache and Shiraz.
The grapes for Oatley’s wines come from various key vineyard regions across Australia from both vineyards that the family own and from select growers with whom they work in long-term partnerships. They also own three wineries in Mudgee, McLaren Vale and Margaret River (where Larry Cherubino is based).
As mentioned above, the 100% Riesling grapes for the Robert Oatley Signature Series Riesling come from the Great Southern wine region of Western Australia. It is recognised by many as Australia’s newest high-quality Riesling region, the Great Southern encompasses a spectrum of sub-districts that are delivering remarkably delicious and often age-worthy wines of tremendous success. These include the Pongurups, Mount Barker, Albany, Denmark and Frankland River sub-regions.
This wine is made from several individual parcels of free-run juice from Porongorup, Frankland River and Mount Barker which are fermented with neutral yeast to retain the inherent fruit character. The wine is made with minimal intervention to produce a varietally pure, excellent early to mid-term drinking wine.
Robert Oatley Signature Series Riesling is a softly textured, crisp, dry, lemon-lime fruited wine with a fine line of acidity.
This Western Australian Riesling works with light, fresh dishes.
Try with seafood like grilled prawns or seared scallops, a zesty goat cheese salad with green apple slices a platter of fresh oysters or a creamy chicken and leek risotto
It also works well with spicy Asian dishes. Try it with Thai green curry or Vietnamese spring rolls.
