Description

Seifried Estate Aotea Sauvignon Blanc is a 100% Sauvignon Blanc crafted from the finest single-vineyard parcels in sun-drenched Nelson, representing the absolute pinnacle of the Seifried family’s winemaking craft. Labelled under the family’s premium reserve range, this single-vineyard masterpiece showcases crisp tropical aromatics, vibrant citrus, and a beautifully layered, textured finish. A sophisticated alternative to classic Marlborough profiles, it is a must-try for any cool-climate Sauvignon Blanc enthusiast looking for depth, minerality, and elegance.

The Nelson Terroir & Aotea Vineyards

The fruit for the Seifried Estate Aotea Sauvignon Blanc is harvested exclusively from the family’s prized single-vineyard site of Appleby Vineyard in the Nelson region.

The rich history of the Appleby Vineyard dates back well before European settlement in the early 1800s, when local Māori cultivated the land for kūmara (sweet potato) beds. To create ideal growing conditions, fine gravel and sand were carefully spread across the fields, while cleared scrub was burned to enrich the topsoil with fertile ash and charcoal.

Today, these ancient practices leave behind a unique gravelly, sandy loam. Highly free-draining yet supported by a generous water table beneath, these soils force our vines to dig deep for natural moisture, yielding grapes with remarkable depth and regional character.

Careful canopy management throughout the growing season ensures the 100% Sauvignon Blanc vines produce classic, intense varietal character.

Vinification

  • The fruit is de-stemmed and pressed immediately after harvest.
  • A cool fermentation is initiated in stainless steel tanks.
  • This retains the wine’s clean, fresh aromatic fruit character.
  • Suitable for Vegetarians and Vegans.

About Seifried Estate: Pioneer Nelson Winemakers

Established in 1973, Seifried Estate is a family-owned winery nestled in the heart of New Zealand’s sunshine capital, Nelson. Austrian-born Hermann Seifried and his New Zealand-born wife, Agnes, pioneered the region’s fine wine production when they planted their first vines in the Moutere Valley between Nelson and Motueka.

Their initial two hectares featured 14 Vitis vinifera varieties grafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstock – a forward-thinking approach that laid the ground for decades of success. Their inaugural 1976 harvest yielded five distinctive varietal wines, initially sold via mail order and directly from the cellar door. They are also famous for their award-winning dessert wine Sweet Agnes.

Today, Seifried Estate owns over 320 hectares of sustainably accredited vineyards across ten distinct Nelson locations. All three of Hermann and Agnes’ children now work in the business, ensuring this legendary family legacy continues to thrive.

About The Nelson Wine Region

Located at the top of New Zealand’s South Island, the Nelson wine-producing region offers pristine growing conditions. North-facing vineyard sites benefit from diverse soils—from free-draining gravels to heavy alluvial clays—and an enviable climate featuring frosty winters, long dry summers, cool autumn nights, and the highest sunshine hours in New Zealand.

Why Is This Wine Called Aotea?

The name Aotea is derived from “Aotearoa”, the Māori name for New Zealand, meaning “Land of the Long Cloud.”

Tasting Notes

Nose: An inviting, highly aromatic bouquet exploding with crushed passionfruit, ripe guava, and zesty lime, underpinned by subtle notes of fresh elderflower and crushed herbs.

Palate: Generous and brilliantly structured. The mouthwatering acidity carries ripe citrus, gooseberry, and juicy white peach across the palate. Thanks to the low-yielding single-vineyard fruit, it delivers a fleshy, textured mid-palate with a distinct mineral streak that adds weight and sophistication.

Finish: Crisp, dry, and remarkably persistent with a lingering burst of tangy grapefruit and flinty minerality.

Food Pairing

This premium New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc is a great match for pan-seared scallops, fresh oysters, asparagus and pea risotto, or a tangy goat’s cheese crottin.
