Produced by the legendary San Michele Appiano winery in Südtirol-Alto Adige, St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio from the winery’s Linea Classica delivers vibrant orchard fruit, silky weight, and a pristine alpine minerality. Whether you are seeking a refined aperitif or a versatile Italian white wine for food pairing, this bottle showcases why Alto Adige produces some of Italy’s finest cool-climate whites. Forget the neutral, watery mass-market expressions – this is authentic Northern Italian Pinot Grigio crafted with precision at the foot of the Dolomites.
The secret behind the intense varietal purity of St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio lies in its unique origin. Sourced from selected vineyards in the Appiano region, specifically across the sun-drenched municipalities of St. Michael and Kaltern, the vines thrive at altitudes ranging between 400 and 500 metres above sea level. Here, warm Mediterranean breezes meet cold alpine air currents from the surrounding mountains, creating dramatic diurnal temperature swings.
This unique microclimate enables the grapes to retain high natural acidity while developing complex, ripe aromatics. The vineyards are planted in nutrient-rich, calcareous pebbly soils, infusing the wine with its signature slate-like minerality and structured backbone.
San Michele Appiano (St Michael-Eppan) is widely celebrated as one of Italy’s premier cooperative wineries. Established in 1907, it now unites 350 wine-making families farming 370 hectares of pristine mountain vineyards. The winery made Italian wine history when Gambero Rosso awarded it “Winery of the Year”, the first time a cooperative ever received this prestigious title. The expertise of Master Winemaker Hans Terzer also led the Gambero Rosso to rank him among the ‘Top 10 Master Winemakers in the World’ in 2000.
An outstanding match for grilled sea bass, pan-seared scallops, creamy seafood risotto, chicken piccata, or light pasta dishes tossed in pesto. Serve well-chilled (8–10°C).
Is St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio dry or sweet?
St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio is a crisp, dry white wine. While it exhibits rich, fruity aromas of ripe pear, apple, and stone fruit, it finishes completely dry with vibrant acidity and a clean mineral backbone.
What makes Pinot Grigio from Alto Adige different from other Italian Pinot Grigio?
Unlike mass-produced Pinot Grigio from flat, warm plains, Alto Adige Pinot Grigio is grown at high altitudes in mountain soils near the Dolomites. The combination of cold mountain air, warm sunny days, and pebbly soils creates wines with greater aromatic intensity, richer body, higher natural acidity, and distinct mineral complexity.
How should I serve and store St Michael-Eppan Pinot Grigio?
For the best tasting experience, serve this wine well-chilled between 8°C and 10°C. While it is designed to be vibrant and fresh upon release, the structural balance and quality winemaking allow it to age gracefully in a cool wine cellar for 2 to 3 years.
