Description

Urbina Blanco Rioja, i.e. white Rioja, is made from 100% Viura grapes in the north-western part of La Rioja Alta.

Bodegas Urbina is a small, traditional and family-owned Rioja wine estate. This single estate is located in Cuzcurrita de Rio Tiron on the north-western boundary of DOC Rioja. Urbina has 75 hectares of vineyards at two main vineyard sites – the first site is at Cuzcurrita de Rio Turon, an area well-known for producing Riojas capable of ageing for many years ideal for Gran Reserva Rioja. The other vineyards are located at Uruñuela, in the heart of the Rioja DOC, which consistently produces wines of great quality and body. For four generations, the Urbina family had dedicated themselves to producing Rioja wines and, following in his father’s footsteps, Pedro Urbina is the current wine-maker. In 1976 the family took the decision to bottle and age all the wine made themselves, rather than selling grapes to other wine producers, and the single estate Bodegas Urbina was created.

The Viura (also known as Macabeo) grapes for Urbina Blanco Rioja are sourced from vineyards with average vine age of more than 30 years old and with calcareous and alluvial soils. The wine undergoes a cold maceration prior to alcoholic fermentation which is in temperature controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is then left to age on the lees which gives it extra elegance and complexity.

Tasting Notes

Urbina Rioja Blanco is a pale golden yellow colour and has an aromatic, floral nose (acacia) with white fruit and citrus notes. The palate has flavours of apricot, peach and some pear notes. with a subtle, elegant, slightly creamy and lingering finish.
