Description

Val do Galir Godello is a Galician white wine made by Compañía Vinicola del Norte de España, better known as CVNE, at their Virgen del Galir winery which is located in the small town of Éntoma in Orense in northeastern Spain.

CVNE was established on the 24th of March 1879 in Haro, Rioja. Set up by two brothers, Eusebio and Raimundo Real de Asúa. CVNE is based in the traditional neighbourhood of the station, in the heart of the Rioja wine region. Historically, some of the oldest wineries of Rioja Alta established themselves here to benefit from the ease of transport via rail to the port of Bilbao, the most efficient form of transport in those days. Today, as well as three different estates in Rioja, the company owns vineyards across Spain including Roger Goulart in Catalunya, Bela in Ribera del Duero and Virgen del Galir in Galicia.

Virgen de Galir Winery

The Virgen del Galir winery is located in the Valdeorras region of Galicia, a region famous for white wines made from Godello and red wines made from Mencia. It was founded in 2002 and acquired by CVNE in 2018. It is located in a small village called Orense in Etoma in the valley of the Galir River in northwest Spain. The famous pilgrimage route of the “Camino de Santiago” passes through this village. The estate consists of 40 hectares of vineyards in the towns of Éntoma and Las Ermitas with another 20 hectares being planted.

Vineyards & Vinification

The grapes for the Val do Galir Godello come from the estate’s premier cru A Malosa vineyard in the village of Éntoma. This is a plot of 21 hectares which was planted in around 2015, in the Don Fiz area, in the centre of “Val do Galir”. It is a vineyard of different soils: extreme and poor soil with 100% slate shales in the easternmost zone; soils of loam and clay in the westernmost part. South and north orientations. It grows in terraces ranging from 400 meters to 600 meters above sea level. Grapes are harvested by hand into 15kg crates. The wine undergoes a cold maceration, fermentation and 3 months on its lees in stainless steel tanks, foudre and 500 Litre French oak barrels.

Val do Galir Godello is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.
