Hambledon Vineyard, English Wine Pioneers
Established in 1952 by Major-General Sir Guy Salisbury-Jones, Hambledon Vineyard is recognised as the UK’s oldest commercial vineyard and the birthplace of modern English wine. Situated on the steep, south-facing slopes of Hampshire’s South Downs, the estate sits atop a pure Newhaven Chalk formation identical to the hallowed Grand Cru terroirs of Champagne’s Côte des Blancs. This subsoil provides the perfect drainage and mineral profile for premium viticulture.

Today, under the prestigious stewardship of Berry Bros. & Rudd and Symington Family Estates, Hambledon focuses on precision-driven, Chardonnay-led traditional method sparkling wines. By utilising the UK’s first state-of-the-art gravity-fed winery and employing extended lees ageing deep within their underground chalk cellars, they preserve the fruit’s structural integrity to craft cuvées celebrated for their vibrant acidity, complex autolytic character and exceptional texture.
Come and join us at the Hambledon Vineyard Wine Dinner and raise a glass to Hampshire’s finest.
Hambledon Vineyard Wine Dinner — A Brief Review and a few photos
Despite the unseasonably warm evening, Tuesday’s Hambledon Vineyard Wine Dinner at Lysses House Hotel was a thoroughly enjoyable celebration of English sparkling wine, and a fitting way to mark English Wine Week 2026.
With Lucy Stewart unable to attend, Hambledon Vineyard’s Susie Mayne stepped in at short notice to guide guests through Hambledon’s history and winemaking philosophy – and did so brilliantly, bringing real warmth and expertise to the evening. Our thanks to her for stepping into the breach.

The kitchen team at Lysses House had clearly put real thought into the pairings, and two stood out as the highlights of the night. The roasted duck breast, served with risotto, curly kale, and an orange-scented sauce, was a beautiful match for the Hambledon Première Cuvée Rosé – the wine’s bright red fruit and fine mousse cutting cleanly through the richness of the duck. Equally memorable was the choux pastry ball filled with Rosary goat’s cheese mousse, paired with the Hambledon Blanc de Blancs Cuvée – the wine’s precision and mineral edge proved a perfect foil for the cheese’s tang.

From the Classic Cuvée on arrival through to the Blanc de Blancs, the evening showcased the full breadth of what Hambledon – England’s oldest commercial vineyard, founded in 1952 – is capable of. Grown on the same Newhaven Chalk that underpins Champagne’s finest terroirs, these are wines that continue to prove English sparkling wine belongs on the same stage as its illustrious neighbour.
A warm thank you to Susie Mayne and to the team at Lysses House Hotel, for a memorable evening.
