Wines from Ribera del Duero are defined by the region’s extreme “nine months of winter, three months of hell” climate. Located on a high-altitude plateau, the vineyards experience dramatic temperature swings that result in thick-skinned grapes with concentrated flavours.
The star of the show is Tempranillo (known locally as Tinto Fino), which produces deeply colored, structured reds with notes of dark plum, leather, and tobacco. These wines are often classified by their ageing – ranging from the fruit-forward Roble and Crianza to the complex, long-lived Reserva and Gran Reserva – all of which benefit from the region’s signature balance of richness and acidity.

Now in its fifth consecutive year, the Reach for Ribera del Duero campaign is a UK-wide initiative run by the Regulatory Board of Ribera del Duero DO designed to spotlight the incredible diversity and evolving styles within Spain’s Ribera del Duero region. While traditionally known for its powerful, high-impact reds, the campaign highlights a “new generation” of winemaking that embraces elegance and freshness. By focusing on high-altitude vineyards and old-vine heritage, the initiative encourages wine enthusiasts to look beyond the heavy tannins and explore the more nuanced expressions of the region.
