Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet Reserve Sauternes is a blend of Sémillon, which gives roundness and refinement to the wine, Sauvignon Blanc, giving fresh aromas and fruit and Muscadelle, which gives aromatic character.
Mouton Cadet is widely considered to be one of Bordeaux’s most successful wine brands and was created in 1934. It was one of the biggest brands in the UK and USA throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. It is, perhaps, not so popular as a brand in the UK, but it is still well known as a prestige brand in many wine markets and the wines are still of very good quality.
Philippe Sereys de Rothschild succeeded his mother, the Baroness, as Chair of the Supervisory Board in September 2014, then became Chairman and CEO of the family company in April 2018. He remains determined to further enhance Mouton Cadet’s reputation worldwide to forge forward with the evolution of a great brand. In order to maintain constant quality at the highest level for Mouton Cadet, Baron Philippe de Rothschild has implemented an innovative sourcing policy based on parcel selection and partnerships with winegrowers.
Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet Réserve Sauternes is made from classic Sauternes grape varieties, mainly Sémillon with Sauvignon Blanc and a small amount of Muscadelle, grown in Bordeaux. The grapes are affected by noble rot (Botrytis cinerea), which concentrates their sugars and flavours, and are hand-harvested in several passes to select only perfectly ripened berries. After gentle pressing, the highly concentrated juice is fermented slowly, leaving natural residual sweetness, and then matured for a period to develop balance and complexity before blending and bottling. The result is a rich, honeyed dessert wine with vibrant acidity and classic Sauternes character.
The 2016 Baron Philippe de Rothschild Mouton Cadet Reserve Sauternes is 88% Semillon, 10% Sauvignon Blanc and 2% Muscadelle.
Incredibly rich, the wine reveals succulent aromas of jammy Mirabelle plum, yellow peach and maple syrup, lifted by subtle bergamot notes that bring freshness on the finish.
