Description

Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Grande Chatelaine is the estate’s prestigious flagship Sancerre — a refined, barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc that stands at the very top of their range.

Crafted from the oldest vines planted on the prized “caillottes” terroir, this cuvée prestige delivers exceptional depth, complexity, and elegance rarely found in Sancerre.

Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Grande Chatelaine Winemaking

  • The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Grande Chatelaine come from the estate’s oldest vines
  • These vines are planted on pebbly clay-limestone slopes, locally known as “caillottes”
  • The grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted before gentle and slow pressing
  • The juice undergoes cold settling before fermentation
  • Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels (30% new oak) in the Mellot family’s historic cellars in the heart of Sancerre village
  • Barrel fermentation lasts between 2 and 7 months
  • The wine then ages for a further 20 months before release
  • Barrel fermentation and extended ageing give the wine a wonderful oaky and vanilla character that remains elegant and balanced, never overpowering

Domaine Joseph Mellot, Family-Owned Since 1513

Domain Joseph Mellot was established in 1513 by Pierre Etienne Mellot and remains in the Mellot family to this day. The estate is currently under the stewardship of Catherine Corbeau Mellot who found herself in the role after the tragic death of her husband, Alexandre Mellot, in 2005. Domaine Joseph Mellot is one of the most historic wine companies in the Loire, certainly one of the most prestigious and has been key in developing vino-tourism in the region.

Vineyards Throughout The Loire Region

As well as vineyards in Sancerre, they also own vineyards in Menetou Salon and Pouilly Fume. Mellot also owns two other domains in the Loire. They are Domaine Jean-Michel Sorbe acquired in 1999, which has vineyards in Quincy and Reuilly and Domaine Pierre Duret acquired in 1995 and also located in Quincy.

Sustainable Wine-growing

Joseph Mellot was the first domain in the Central Loire Valley to obtain ISO 14001 certification and BRC A accreditation. Today all of its vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable agriculture.

This wine is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A brilliant yellow-gold colour with attractive golden highlights.

Nose: Intense and expressive, revealing beautiful aromas of ripe apricot, zesty lemon, and delicate woody nuances.

Palate: Mineral and precise, with generous flavours of yellow-flesh fruits that bring both complexity and suppleness. The wine is beautifully balanced, with a long, persistent, and refined finish.

Food pairing

  • Fresh goat cheese (especially Crottin de Chavignol)
  • Oysters, scallops, and grilled prawns
  • Pan-fried or grilled white fish with lemon
  • Roast chicken or pork with light cream sauces
  • Creamy pasta with clams or herbs
  • Grilled asparagus and vegetable tarts

The subtle oak and rich texture of La Grande Chatelaine also allow it to pair beautifully with slightly more indulgent dishes than a typical stainless-steel Sancerre.
