Joseph Mellot Pouilly-Fumé Le Troncsec is a single vineyard Pouily-Fumé and the younger sibling to the barrel-fermented and lees-aged Pouilly-Fumé Les Grands Edvins
Domain Joseph Mellot was established in 1513 by Pierre Etienne Mellot and remains in the Mellot family to this day. The estate is currently under the stewardship of Catherine Corbeau Mellot who found herself in the role after the tragic death of her husband, Alexandre Mellot, in 2005. Domaine Joseph Mellot is one of the most historic wine companies in the Loire, certainly one of the most prestigious and has been key in developing vino-tourism in the region. As well as vineyards in Sancerre, they also own vineyards in Menetou Salon and Pouilly Fume. Mellot also owns two other domains in the Loire. They are Domaine Jean-Michel Sorbe acquired in 1999, who has vineyards in Quincy and Reuilly and Domaine Pierre Duret acquired in 1995 and is also located in Quincy. All vineyard processes are carried out in an environmentally conscious manner, adapted for each terroir.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes for Joseph Mellot Pouilly-Fumé Le Troncsec come from a single vineyard of 9.5 hectares, located in the commune of Saint Laurent l’Abbaye. The vines are planted on soils primarily composed of Kimmeridgian limestone marl. This is typified by a stoney surface and clay deeper down. The grapes are mechanically harvested and undergo a gentle pneumatic pressing. The wine is vinified in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats where it is also aged on the fine lees.
Joseph Mellot was the first domain in the Central Loire Valley to obtain ISO 14001 certification and BRC A accreditation. Today all of its vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable agriculture.
From Mellot:
Appearance: Pale yellow colour with light green hues.
Nose: Intense nose with citrus notes and small yellow-flesh fruits, a subtle mineral touch.
Palate: fleshy and mineral mouth with aromas of yellow-flesh fruits and Mirabelle plum touches.
Joseph Mellot Pouilly-Fumé Le Troncsec is a marvellous match for shellfish and fish such as sole, salmon or trout, lobster or with green salads.
The power and richness of this wine also suit dishes like chicken tagine cooked with citrus or a blanquette of veal.
Of course, it is a great match for local cheeses like Crottins de Chavignol and other goats cheeses too.
