Description

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is made from 100% Old Vine Grenache Noir sourced from a vineyard located close to Blewitt Springs in the McLaren Vale.

Yangarra Estate: Owned by Jackson Family Wines

Yangarra Estate is owned by Jackson Family Wines (JFW). The Chairman and proprietor of Jackson Family Wines is Barbara Banke, who was married to Jess Jackson of Kendall Jackson Fame. JFW had a vision to create a global wine company known for its extraordinary premium and luxury wines from many of the greatest wine-growing regions of the world.

Indeed, under Barbara’s stewardship, they have since become one of the world’s largest and high-quality wine companies with interests in California (La Crema, Hartford Court, Camelot Highlands and many more), Chile, Italy, France and South Africa, with their new Capensis project.

A Specialist in Southern Rhône Varieties

Yangarra Estate was established in 2001 when Jackson Family Wines acquired Eringa Park Vineyard. It is a single vineyard estate located in McLaren Vale and specialises in Southern Rhône varieties with emphasis on the estate’s bush-vine Grenache.

The property is 170 total hectares, of which nearly 90 hectares are planted to vine. Other grape varieties grown here include well-known grape varieties such as Shiraz, Roussanne and Grenache Blanc, with some much more obscure varieties (at least in Australia) such as Bourboulenc, Picpoul Noir, Clairette Blanc and Counois.

Yangarra’s combination of rare geologies, moderate altitude, abundant sunshine and refreshing evening breezes makes it perfect for growing varieties that thrive in the moderate maritime Mediterranean environments. The estate is certified organic and biodynamic.

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache Vineyards

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is produced from gnarly old vines planted in 1946. There are 17 hectares of un-irrigated, bush vines planted on a deep sandy dune called The Beach, overlying the North Maslin Sands geological formation.

Old Vine Grenache Vinification

  • Sourced exclusively from 13.3 hectares of un-irrigated bush vines planted in 1946
  • Hand-picked between 17-24 March
  • Selectively sorted at the winery
  • Gently destemmed: 50% crushed, 50% whole berries retained
  • Wild yeast fermentation in stainless steel
  • Very gentle pump-over regime, often just wetting the cap
  • Extended maceration where tannin taming or polishing required, in some cases up to 7 months
  • No pressings used
  • Matured in a mixture of old French and Austrian oak foudre and puncheons, ceramic egg, and amphora
  • Certified Organic and Biodynamic

Tasting Notes

Yangarra Estate Old Vine Grenache is a complex, perfumed, medium-bodied, elegant wine with a trademark tannin structure. The nose is a rush of cloves, lavender, dark cherries and raspberries. The palate is rich and young, with grainy tannins that will soften in time. As it evolves, dry cocoa and earthiness develop. A serious wine, this old vine Grenache finishes gently, grippy, spicy and full.

Food Pairing

This is a great match for roast duck and other game birds. Also makes an interesting match for gravadlax and homemade horseradish.

For the cheeseboard, try with a good Manchego or aged Gouda.
