Description

Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto della Valpolicella is a sweet red wine from the Veneto wine-growing region. This Italian dessert wine is made from carefully selected grapes that undergo the appassimento process and offers a luscious and concentrated flavour profile.

About Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto della Valpolicella

The grapes used to make Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto della Valpolicella come from a small, one hectare, east-facing vineyard situated on moraine clay and limestone soils in Pedemonte. The vines here are around 25 years old.

Winemaking

  • The grapes are hand-harvested at the end of September / beginning of October.
  • They consist of a combination of:
    • 30% Corvina
    • 30% Corvinone
    • 30% Rondinella
    • 10% comprised of Rossignola, Oseleta, Negrara, and Dindarella
  • After harvest, the grapes are dried in small wooden crates known as “Arele” in humidity and temperature-controlled warehouses.
  • The grapes are dried for 4 months, during which time they lose a great deal of water content.
  • This drying process greatly concentrates the flavours and sweetness of the grapes.
  • After 4 months, the grapes are soft-pressed and naturally fermented.
  • The wine is then aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 2 years.
  • It receives a further 6 months ageing in the bottle before release.
  • Suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

About Tedeschi Wines: Since 1824

Tedeschi Wines can trace its roots back to 1824 when Nicolo Tedeschi purchased several vineyards (although the family have records of owning vineyards back to 1630). A descendant, Riccardo Tedeschi, purchased vineyards in 1918, which included Monte Fontana and their famous Amarone vineyard, Monte Olmi.

Today, Tedeschi remains a family business and, through a combination of tradition and innovation, is one of the foremost wineries and one of the best producers of Amarone and Recioto wines in the Veneto region. The family manages 74 hectares of vineyards, of which 29 are family-owned. Amarone della Valpolicella is considered to be the most prestigious wine of the Veneto region. Most recently, the family have further invested in the new vineyard sites of La Fabriseria in Pontare and Maternigo in the Eastern part of Valpolicella.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: Intense ruby red with garnet highlights; crystal-clear and brilliantly transparent.

Bouquet: Lush sweet fruit aromas of raspberries, wild blackberries, and blueberries, layered with elegant Slavonian oak notes of vanilla and subtle spice.

Palate: Elegant yet powerful, with superb balance between rich sweetness and fresh acidity. Velvety tannins support concentrated berry flavours that echo the nose. Long, persistent finish lingers with sweet fruit and spice.

Food Pairing

Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto della Valpolicella is excellent served on its own as a meditative dessert wine, perfect for quiet contemplation after dinner.

Great food pairings include:

  • Strong, mature cheeses — think creamy Gorgonzola, aged Stilton, or pungent blue cheeses, where the wine’s sweetness cuts through the intensity.
  • Foie gras — its luxurious richness and subtle spice harmonise perfectly with the wine’s velvety texture.
  • Dry pastries and berry desserts — almond biscotti, strawberry tarts, raspberry clafoutis, or fresh berries with cream; the wine’s red fruit notes (raspberry, blackberry) echo and elevate the flavours.

FAQs

What is Recioto della Valpolicella?

It is a traditional sweet red dessert wine from the Veneto region of Italy, made via the appassimento process (drying grapes to concentrate flavours and sugars). It’s the sweeter “ancestor” of Amarone.

What is the difference between Recioto and Amarone?

Recioto and Amarone are both made from the same dried Valpolicella grapes using the appassimento process; however, Recioto’s fermentation is stopped earlier to retain sweetness in the wine, whilst Amarone is left to ferment fully, producing a powerful, drier style. It is said that Amarone essentially began as an accident, that a batch of Recioto was forgotten about and fermented all the way to dryness.

How Should Recioto Be Served?

Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto della Valpolicella should be served chilled (around 12–14°C) in small glasses.

What does it taste like?

Intense ruby-red with garnet hints; aromas of raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, and subtle oak spice; elegant, balanced sweetness with velvety structure and a long, persistent finish.

How long can Tedeschi Capitel Fontana Recioto age?

It has excellent ageing potential and will typically last for 10 to 15 years if cellared well.
