E. Guigal Saint Joseph Blanc is a French white wine made Saint Joseph Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) in the northern Rhône wine region of France. Although Saint Joseph is primarily a red wine appellation making wines from the Syrah grape, there is a small amount of white wine made, and up to 10% white grapes (Roussanne or Marsanne) can go into the red wine blends.
Guigal Wines was founded in 1946 by Etienne Guigal in the village of Ampuis. His son, Marcel, took over from his father in 1961. The Guigal family owns vineyards in Condrieu and in the Côte-Rôtie with illustrious plots in many famous appellations. The wines are made and aged at 12th century Chateau d’Ampuis, located in the northern Rhone.
In the summer of 2003, in an effort to improve quality and control over all aspects of winemaking, Guigal opened an onsite cooperage. The cooperage at the Château d’Ampuis works in partnership with the cooperage at Chagny managed by Seguin Moreau.
The grapes for the E. Guigal Saint-Joseph Blanc primarily come from the estates of Jean-Louis Grippat and Vallouit located in the communes of Tournon and Sarras. The vineyards have a vine age of 20 to 50 years old and they have limestone and pebbly sand soils.
Great with starters, particularly dishes with goats cheese or fish.
Saint-Joseph Blanc is a distinguished white wine from the Northern Rhône Valley, produced along the right bank of the Rhône River on steep granite slopes.
Made primarily from Marsanne with smaller amounts of Roussanne, these wines offer aromatic notes of white flowers, stone fruits, honey, and almonds, with a characteristic mineral quality.
Medium to full-bodied with good acidity, Saint-Joseph Blanc is typically fermented and aged in a combination of stainless steel and oak to balance freshness with texture. The wines tend to be more restrained than Condrieu and more accessible than Hermitage Blanc.
