Description

Torbreck The Steading is a traditional Barossa GSM blend, that is a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro. Not to be confused with The Steading Blanc.

Torbreck Vintners was founded in 1994 by David Powell and is located at Marananga on the western ridge of the Barossa Valley. It is named after a forest situated just south of Inverness in the Highlands of Scotland. The roots go back to 1992 when Powell, who was then working at Rockford, began to discover and clean up a few sections of dry-grown old vines so that he could buy the fruit for his own wine. The first wine made under the Torbreck label was during the 1995 vintage, with the finished wines released in 1997. Torbreck was acquired by Pete Knight in 2008 and the senior winemaker is Ian Hongell.

Torbreck wines are made in a style emulating those of the Rhone Valley and are made from various grapes including red grapes Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro as well as white grapes Viognier, Roussanne and Marsanne. The overwhelming majority of the vines that the wines are made from are dry-grown, nearly all are 80 – 125 years old and they are tended and harvested by hand.

Vineyards

Torbreck The Steading 2019 is made from a blend of Grenache (60%), Shiraz (21%) and Mataro (19%) from very old (on pre-phylloxera rootstock that survived the vine-pull scheme of the 1980s), from a selection of plots in the Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Seppeltsfield, Gomersal and Ebenezer regions.

Torbreck The Steading Vinification

Each of the individual blocks is vinified separately in both wooden and concrete open-top fermenters with gentle pumping over twice a day for 6 to 7 days. The wine is then basket pressed and allowed to flow under gravity to underground concrete. The wine is then later racked into used French hogsheads where malolactic fermentation takes place. After 20 months of maturation on the fine lees the wine parcels are blended and bottled without fining or filtration.

‘Steading’ is a Scots word meaning a group of farm buildings.

Torbreck The Steading is suitable for vegetarians and vegans.

Tasting Notes

From Torbreck: “The Steading has a fragrancy, purity of fruit, mid-palate concentration and savoury tannin profile that makes it an exemplary wine. Vibrant aromas of violet, star anise and spice all unfold to reveal an impressive array of underlying fruit flavours. Silky, succulent dark fruits, black olive, savoury earth, liquorice and Asian spice. These complex yet elegant flavours are all neatly interwoven with a perfect balance of acidity and supple, silky tannins. The Steading will continue to develop with time in the cellar, and provide those with patience great enjoyment well into the next decade.”

Food Pairing

Torbreck The Steading is a great match for grilled ribeye or lamb chops seasoned with rosemary or a slow-braised beef Bourguignon.

Try with game meats like venison with a berry sauce to enhance its complexity, while vegetarian options like grilled portobello mushrooms or a robust mushroom lasagna will also work well.

For the cheeseboard, try with an aged Cheddar, Gouda, or a milder blue cheese.
