St Hallett Old Block Shiraz is one of the Barossa Valley’s top Shiraz wines.
St Hallett Wines, founded in 1944 by the Lindner family in South Australia’s Barossa Valley, has grown from humble beginnings producing fortified wines into a celebrated name in Australian winemaking, now under Accolade Wines since 2017. While the winery was established in 1944, its flagship Old Block Shiraz debuted with the 1982 vintage, with the 1985 release marking a pivotal moment—introducing the enduring logo and cementing its reputation on the global stage. Renowned as a master of Barossa Shiraz, St Hallett crafts full-flavored wines that showcase the region’s diverse terroirs, with offerings like the vibrant Faith Shiraz and the iconic Old Block Shiraz, sourced from ancient vines, reflecting depth and character.
The Old Block Shiraz embodies St Hallett’s aim to produce a consistent, multi-layered wine that highlights grape variety and origin, achieved through a hands-off winemaking approach. Significant blending and assembling occur before release, with careful attention to cooperage—shifting from American oak pre-2000s to French oak today—where the wine matures for eight to twenty months, resulting in a silky texture with no raw edges. This acknowledged Barossa icon is complemented by other varieties like Grenache, Riesling, and rosé, all reflecting a philosophy that balances tradition with innovation to emphasize the region’s unique fruit.
The Barossa region boasts a varied landscape, featuring a mix of valleys and slopes with altitudes stretching from 130 meters in the southern Barossa Valley up to 550 meters along the chilly, high ridges of the Eden Valley. Its ancient terrain, formed over 200 million years, is blanketed by a mosaic of soils—from rich red and brown clay loams on the valley floor to the shallow, stony sandy loams atop the eastern and western edges. St Hallett’s Old Block Shiraz emerges from this diversity, crafted as a meticulous blend of hand-picked fruit parcels sourced across these distinctive terroirs.
Ideal food pairings include grilled ribeye steak with a peppercorn crust, slow-roasted lamb shoulder with rosemary and garlic, or venison loin with a blackberry reduction, where the wine’s tannins cut through fat and enhance savory flavors.
It also shines with rich stews like beef bourguignon, aged cheeses such as mature cheddar, or a dark chocolate tart with berry compote, complementing the wine’s fruit-forward depth.
The St Hallett Old Block Shiraz 2009 is a deep garnet red with violet hues, showcasing the opulence of old-vine Barossa Valley Shiraz balanced by the fragrant, structured fruit from higher-altitude Eden Valley parcels. On the nose, it offers lifted floral and spicy aromas with dark cherry, blackberry, and hints of anise and white pepper. The palate is supple and textural, delivering rich dark fruits, seamless integration, and classic Old Block finesse, with silky tannins and well-balanced acidity leading to a long, poised finish.
