Joseph Mellot, A Historic Wine Producer

Domaine Joseph Mellot was established in 1513 by Pierre Etienne Mellot and remains in the Mellot family to this day. The estate is currently under the stewardship of Catherine Corbeau Mellot who found herself in the role after the tragic death of her husband, Alexandre Mellot, in 2005. Domaine Joseph Mellot is one of the most historic wine companies in the Loire, certainly one of the most prestigious and has been key in developing vino-tourism in the region. As well as vineyards in Sancerre, they also have vineyards in Quincy, Reuilly, Pouilly Fume and Menetou Salon, amongst others.

Pioneers of Sustainable Agriculture

Joseph Mellot was the first domain in the Central Loire Valley to obtain ISO 14001 certification and BRC A accreditation. Today, all of its vineyards are cultivated according to the principles of sustainable agriculture.

Sancerre, From Pinot Noir to Sauvignon Blanc

The Sancerre wine-growing region has a long history, with evidence of its existence dating back to ancient times. The region saw significant growth in the 12th century due to the efforts of the local monks and nobility. Initially, the vineyards were dominated by Pinot Noir, but the devastating outbreak of Phylloxera in the 19th century wiped out the vineyards. In time, more and more Sauvignon Blanc was planted as it was found to be a grape variety well-suited to Sancerre’s climate and terroir. It would go on to become the star of the region’s most renowned appellation in the Central Loire.

Tasting Notes

Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Graveliere has a pale golden colour with green hues, displaying lovely clarity and brilliance. The nose is powerful, showcasing floral and fruity aromas of passion fruit, white peach and apricot. On the palate, the wine exhibits an elegant balance between freshness, structure and a fresh minerality. Flavours of citrus and tropical fruits lead to a fruity and lingering finish.

For the cheeseboard try with goat’s cheese, especially the famous Crottin de Chavignol also from the Loire Valley.

FAQs

What Grape Is Sancerre Made From?

If you have ever wondered what grape variety is inside a bottle of Sancerre, the answer is simple: all white Sancerre is made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc.

While the label prominently displays the name of the famous French region, the grape itself is always Sauvignon Blanc. Located in the eastern stretches of France’s scenic Loire Valley, Sancerre is universally considered the global benchmark region for this incredibly popular grape.

What is special about the Sancerre Terroir and Terres Blanches Soils?

The unique terroir of Sancerre is shaped by a combination of limestone, clay and flint-rich soils. Among the most famous are the terres blanches soils, which contribute richness, structure and complexity to many of the region’s finest wines. Joseph Mellot Sancerre La Gravelière reflects this celebrated Sancerre terroir through its purity, elegance and mineral-driven style.

Is Sancerre Always White?

While white wine accounts for the vast majority of production and is always made from Sauvignon Blanc, the appellation also produces small quantities of Sancerre rosé and Sancerre red wine. These wines are made exclusively from Pinot Noir and offer a lighter, elegant alternative to the region’s famous white wines.

Why Is Sancerre Trending?

According to Google’s Summergeist Trends Report, Sancerre wine has experienced a significant surge in global popularity, with searches for terms such as “Taylor Swift Sancerre” and “Sancerre wine Taylor Swift” increasing dramatically after the wine was spotted in her documentary series.

However, growing consumer interest in premium Sauvignon Blanc, food-friendly white wines and the unique terroir of the Loire Valley has also contributed to Sancerre’s rising popularity. Historic producers such as Joseph Mellot, Alphonse Mellot and Pascal Jolivet continue to showcase the authentic character of this world-famous French wine region.
