RumChata Cream Liqueur is a popular alcoholic drink that blends premium Caribbean rum with real dairy cream and a unique mix of spices, inspired by traditional Mexican horchata (a sweet, cinnamon-infused rice drink). It is produced in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
RumChata was created by drinks industry veteran Tom Maas. Maas had worked for Jim Beam before he struck out on his own in 2006, producing Agava Loco, the world’s only true “Pepper Cured” Tequila. This was later joined by RumChata in 2009. The brand would go on to be one of the most successful cream liqueurs in the USA: in some states, it outsells Bailey’s! The company was acquired by E&J Gallo Winery in 2021.
As well as this classic version, it is also available in coconut, pineapple and lemon, as well as seasonal pumpkin spice and peppermint bark flavours. It has become a staple in many bars and is often used as an ingredient in dessert-style cocktails or as a flavoured creamer alternative.
RumChata is designed to taste like a mixture of rum and horchata. Indeed, the name is a portmanteau of rum and horchata.
