What could be better than a selection of some of the finest Gins and finest English Sparkling wines that Hampshire has to offer?
Included here are sparkling wines from Hambledon Vineyard, Cottonworth Wines located between Stockbridge and Andover and Raimes Sparkling from near Alresford. If you haven’t tried much English Sparkling wine then these are three of the best.
There are also three bottles of Hampshire Gin: the spicy orange-y Silverback from south of Basingstoke, the precise and clean lemon and lime-driven Hampshire Fine Dry from Winchester Distillery and the new kid on the block, the pink grapefruit and wormwood-based Corner 53 Pomelo Gin from Clanfield.
Hambledon Vineyard Classic Cuvee Brut
Hambledon Vineyard Classic Cuvee Brut has aromas of fresh sourdough, magnolia and lily scents which mingle with a hint of smoke over a core of greengage, red plums and dessert apples. The palate is vivid, almost vibrantly crunchy with precise, structured yet ripe acidity. It is linear, dense and long with momentum and power that bodes well for the future. This wine has energy and latent tension that will unfold to reveal layers of floral and stone fruit aromas and a rich palate with great length.
Cottonworth Classic Cuvee Brut
Cottonworth Classic Cuvée has a pale golden colour and is a floral, aromatic wine with hints of brioche, bready notes and some citrus / lemon notes on the nose. It has a good mousse and is fresh and clean on the palate with good, chalky minerality. It has a clean, dry and persistent finish.
Raimes Classic Brut English Sparkling, Hampshire
Raimes Classic Brut English Sparkling has a light golden colour with fine bubbles and a soft mousse in the mouth. The nose is fresh with lemon / citrus, stone fruit notes and hints of green apple with some toasty oak. The palate is fresh with more citrus notes, creamy texture and a refreshing, lingering finish with good acidity.
“It has a soft fine and persistent mousse. The nose shows a little development with a hint of creamy lemon (lemon tart), the palate is full and well balanced with creamy citrus notes and a biscuit finish.” Jacob Leadley, Winemaker
Corner Fifty Three Pomelo Gin 41%
Corner Fifty Three Pomelo Gin has a wonderfully fresh nose. There are aromas of pink grapefruit, spicy hints of white pepper, savoury woody aromatics, a touch of mint, juniper and honeydew melon. There is an initial burst of sweetness on the palate, more spicy, peppery character and good clean citrus fruit. It is round on the palate with a refreshing hint of bitterness and a clean, fresh and lingering finish.
Silverback Mountain Strength Gin 46%
Silverback Gin is powerful but gentle. With zesty coriander and orange citrus notes at the fore, a touch of spice and the always-present freshness of juniper this is a gin made to be savoured. It is clean and refreshing, born from a base of exclusively British wheat spirit and featuring seven botanicals: juniper, angelica, calamus root, sweet orange, coriander, acacia blossom and lemongrass.
Hampshire Fine Dry Gin, Winchester Distillery 40%
Hampshire Fine Dry Gin has a fresh and clean nose. The juniper aromas are quite dominant but this is backed up by sweet lemon and lime aromas and some more spicy, savoury citrus notes from the coriander. The palate is quite full and round with a nice silky mouthfeel. It has a dry finish, though not bone dry, which is fresh and elegant. A classic London Dry style gin.
