Plymouth Sloe Gin is a traditional sloe gin made by gently steeping the finest sloes in Plymouth Gin, soft, pure Dartmoor water and sugar for approximately 4 months according to a unique 1883 recipe.
Plymouth Gin is a style of gin that by law can only be produced in Plymouth, England, it being a Protected Geographical Indication within the European Union. The Plymouth Gin Distillery (the Black Friars Distillery) is the only gin distillery located in Plymouth and occupies the site of what was once a Dominican Order monastery built in 1431. It has been in operation since 1793. The recipe for Plymouth Gin itself dates from 1793; it comprises seven botanicals, or natural flavourings, blended in a proportion known only to a privileged few. They also produce a Navy Strength Gin.
To create the sloe gin, hand-picked sloe berries—the fruit of the blackthorn bush—are steeped in this high-strength gin along with soft Dartmoor water and a modest amount of sugar. The mixture matures for about four months, allowing the flavours to fully develop. Unlike some sweeter sloe gins, Plymouth keeps the sugar levels low to highlight the natural tartness and complexity of the sloe berries, resulting in a liqueur that strikes a balance between sweet and bitter. All natural. No added colourings or flavourings.
Plymouth Sloe Gin is versatile. It is traditionally enjoyed as a winter warmer during countryside pursuits. It is equally at home with cocktails like the Sloe Gin Fizz or Sloe Royale (with sparkling wine), and can also be sipped neat or over ice. It is celebrated for standing out among sloe gins due to its quality base spirit and nuanced flavour which makes it essential for gin enthusiasts and mixologists alike.
