Plymouth Gin is a style of gin that by law can only be produced in Plymouth, England, it being a Protected Geographical Indication within the European Union. The Plymouth Gin Distillery (the Black Friars Distillery) is the only gin distillery located in Plymouth. It occupies what was once a Dominican Order monastery built in 1431 and has been in operation since 1793. As well as this Original Strength Gin, they also produce a Navy Strength Gin at 57% and a Sloe Gin.
Today, the distillery is owned by Pernod Ricard. The distillery emphasises sustainable sourcing of botanicals and traditional methods to maintain its heritage while meeting modern standards.
Plymouth Gin Original Strength is a handcrafted, batch-distilled gin made with seven botanicals, or natural flavourings, blended in a proportion known only to a privileged few, and soft Dartmoor water.
Plymouth Gin was a staple in the British Royal Navy, particularly the “Navy Strength” Gin bottled at 57% ABV. It was served in the officers’ messes and famously mixed in the classic Gimlet cocktail. Its maritime heritage is reflected in its branding and legacy.
Plymouth Gin Original Strength has a rich juniper aroma with hints of coriander and cardamom, a creamy palate with slight sweetness, and an elegant, long finish with fresh citrus and aromatic notes.
Perfect in cocktails like the Dry Martini, Gimlet, or Gin and Tonic with a lemon twist.
