Foursquare Rum is produced by R L Seale, one of Barbados’ oldest trading houses, a family-owned business whose involvement in rum-making extends from father to son since 1820. The owner and talented head distiller, Richard Seale, is one of the region’s most innovative distillers and blenders and has a passion for producing perfect rum with great flavour. He also campaigns for clarity in the labelling of rums.
The Foursquare Distillery occupies the site of a former sugar factory that dates back to 1636 and, as one of the most modern and efficient rum distilleries in the world, is designed to be both highly energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. Foursquare rum is made from locally owned and sourced sugar cane converted to molasses, fermented very slowly over 44 hours with South African yeast and then distilled. The rum is a blend of pot still and column still rums. The pot still rum brings complexity and flavour, whilst the column still rum adds balance and aroma.
Foursquare Equidem is labelled as a single-blended rum which means that it is a blend of double retort pot still and traditional continuous twin column rums from a single distillery.
Equidem is a blend of two rums, a dual-maturation comprising a five-year-old ex-Bourbon cask that enjoyed a further nine years in an ex-Black Muscat cask. This dual-maturation was further blended with a fourteen-year-old ex-Bourbon cask-matured Rum. Fully matured at the Foursquare Distillery before blending and bottling. Bottled at 61% ABV without chill filtration, at its natural colour, and free from sweeteners and other flavourings.
Black Muscat, a red grape variety, is typically used for sweet dessert wines with rich, fruity profiles, and its influence adds a distinctive twist to this rum. It is a grape variety which produces wines that actually taste “grapey”. The casks come from an unnamed winery in Roussillon, France. Some might recognise the grape variety from the Californian Quady Elysium Black Muscat dessert wine.
From the Distillery
Nose: Lots of Treacle Tart on the nose, with juicy sultanas, overripe nectarines and Victoria plums. Zesty lemons and clementines with a hint of marzipan, ginger and dried turmeric at the end.
Palate: Soft and silky on the palate. A light caramel touch that
develops into sweet, jammy summer fruits of peach and more Victoria plums.
Finish: Astringent black tea with a gingery, peppery, warming
lingering finish.
