Description

Rabl Gruner Veltliner Eiswein is a rare Austrian dessert wine made using grapes picked in the middle of winter, in sub zero conditions so that the grapes are frozen and their sugars are very concentrated.

Weingut Rabl is located in the renowned Kamptal-Donau wine region of Austria and can trace its history back to 1750. Rabl have established a reputation as one of the very best wine producers in Austria, a reputation based upon a philosophy that only the best grapes produce high quality wines, therefore meticulous care and attention is paid to the vines.  Now under the careful eye of Rudolf Rabl Jr. the estate comprises 100 hectares of the best hillside vineyards in and around Langenlois. The Kamp Valley has a unique microclimate and rich soils with an abundance of minerals.

To produce the best grapes foliage treatment is used to ensure a more balanced aeration and exposure to the sun, resulting in healthy grapes. The vineyards at Weingut Rabl are either the best primary rock soil vineyards in and around Langenlois or based on rich loess soils that are of the same high calibre.

The 100% Gruner Veltliner grapes for the Rabl Gruner Veltliner Eiswein are picked in the middle of winter, in sub zero conditions so that the grapes are frozen and their sugars are very concentrated. They are then pressed and separated from the must. Fermentation takes place in oak barrels for 14 weeks and then aged in oak barrel for 10 months thereafter.

Tasting Notes

Rabl Gruner Veltliner Eiswein has lovely aromas of sweet peaches and ripe melon with vanilla through to a richly textured palate. Beautifully balanced sweetness which is rich but not cloying with great length retaining freshness throughout.
