Description

Barone Ricasoli Casalferro is a Super-Tuscan red wine made by Barone Ricasoli, it is bottled as a Toscana IGT and is made from 100% Merlot.

Barone Ricasoli Castello di Brolio is a renaissance Castello (“castle”) situated between Florence and Siena and has been family-owned since 1141 – it is the oldest winery in Italy. That might not seem like the likely ingredients to become one of Italy’s most dynamic and quality-minded wineries however, in the space of the last 10 years, Barone Francesco Ricasoli – the 32nd Baron – has turned Castello di Brolio into one of Italy’s most respected wineries. The Barone has been one of the pioneers of the ‘Chateau’ concept in Tuscany, a concept by which the estate focus is purely on the production of the estate’s top wine.

Casalferro was first produced in 1993 after Francesco arrived at the company, where he was interested in experimenting with non-traditional grape varieties. Older vintages were a Sangiovese / Merlot blend but, over the years, this has become a pure Merlot. Casalferro is only produced in the best vintages. It is a single vineyard wine from the “Casalferro” vineyard, a single plot of land, located at 400 m above sea level facing south-southeast. The soil is brown with a fine clay structure very chalky and has little organic content. 100% Merlot. The wine undergoes a thermo-regulated fermentation that occurs between 24°C and 27°C and takes 14-18 days. The wine is aged for 18 and 21 months in tonneaux, 30% new oak.

Tasting Notes

Intense ruby red in color with black walnut, vanilla, and spice on the nose. Elegant and velvety tannins ensure a long, persistent, and enveloping finish.
