Brouilly is, of course, one of the 10 Beaujolais Crus, and this particular Brouilly is made by a wine co-operative called La Cave des Grands Vins de Fleurie.
La Cave des Grands Vins de Fleurie co-op was founded in 1927, largely by the women of Fleurie, who has become used to working together, during and after WW1, when many of the men from the region were fighting and many would not return. Today the co-op is one of the largest producers Fleurie AC (as well as Brouilly, Chirouble, Morgon, Moulin A Vent, Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages) and has 330 member winegrowers with over 350 hectares of vineyards.
The 100% Gamay grapes for this wine come exclusively from the Brouilly AC. The vineyards sit at the foot of Mont Brouilly with granite, clay-siliceous sediment and clay-limestone soils. The wine is produced using the typical Beaujolais vinification technique of semi-carbonic maceration and the wine is aged for 6 to 8 months in stainless steel vats. Drink now or over the next 3 to 4 years.
These lighter-bodied, fruity wines are crafted for enjoyment in their youth, typically within a few years of release, and are exceptionally versatile companions to various cuisines. From charcuterie and roasted chicken to pork and light cheeses, Brouilly’s easy-drinking nature and vibrant fruit profile make it a reliable and delightful choice for casual meals and gatherings.
This Brouilly is a brilliant, clear, ruby colour. It has a very fruity nose with fruity red berry and floral aromas including strawberry, raspberry, iris and peony. The palate is fresh, lively and fruity, not too heavy but with the tannins providing a slight firmness to the palate. Soft, fruity, floral and delicate finish with good acidity.
Try Brouilly with stewed rabbit; rabbit terrine, charcuterie and cold meats or cheese.
