About Domaine de Boischampt: A Historic Estate Reborn

Domaine de Boischampt is a Beaujolais estate with a remarkable history stretching back to 1642, yet it is very much a property to watch today. Under new ownership since 2018, the domaine has been transformed beyond recognition. The production of bulk wine has been abandoned entirely in favour of quality-driven, terroir-focused winemaking.

The estate is owned by Burgundian Antoine Romero and his partners, Yuko Matsuoka Harris and Bob Harris, an Australian-Japanese couple, with Romero managing the estate day-to-day. The winemaker is Thibaud Baudin, who has honed his craft at both Domaine de la Vougeraie and Domaine d’Henri in Chablis, and who has overseen an ambitious programme of vineyard replanting since his arrival. The domaine began its organic conversion in 2019 and received full organic certification in 2023.

Hillside Vineyards in the Heart of Juliénas

The estate is located in the hillside village of Jullié and comprises 14 hectares of vineyards. The vines are planted on blue stone soils, which are characteristic of Juliénas and the same as the soils in the famous Côte du Py in Morgon. Rather unusually for a wine region dominated by red wine production, the new ownership also decided to plant 3 hectares of Chardonnay. As well as this wine, they also produce three other Julienas cuvées: Les 4 Cerisiers, Beauvernay and Vayolette.

In 2018, the estate only produced wines from two appellations: Julienas and Beaujolais Villages Rouge) but new plots were soon acquired, and today the estate produces several wines from different Beaujolais appellations, including Julienas, Fleurie, Saint-Amour, Chenas and Morgon. They also produced a white wine Beaujolais-Jullié Blanc.

Tasting Notes

Domaine de Boischampt Saint-Amour Tete de Bonnet combines Beaujolais finesse and Burgundian power, offering a beautiful balance of vibrant fruit and ageing potential. Think aromas of raspberries, ripe red berries and brambly fruits, hints of spice and a touch of toast and vanilla. Vibrant acidity and soft tannins.

Food Pairing

Great with charcuterie, creamy cheeses like Brie and Camembert. It is also good with roast chicken, guinea fowl or confit de canard.

About Saint-Amour AOC

The Saint-Amour AOC is the northernmost appellation of the Beaujolais wine region in France. It is one of the 10 crus of Beaujolais, which are recognized for producing the region’s most distinctive and high-quality wines. It was created in February 1946.

It is an AOC of two halves. The diverse soils of the region—comprising granite, schist, and clay—give rise to two distinct styles of wine. One is light and approachable, featuring delicate aromas of iris, violet, and raspberry. The other is bold and complex, with rich notes of kirsch and spice.

Funnily enough, sales of Saint-Amour always seem to go up near Valentine’s Day!
