Caliterra Edicion Limitada B is a Bordeaux style blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Unlike the Caliterra Edicion Limitada M, which is a multi-region blend, the grapes for this wine are all sourced from the Colchagua Valley and it is bottled as a DO Valle de Colchagua.
Caliterra was established in 1996 as a joint venture between the families of Robert Mondavi and Vina Errazuriz. In January 2004 Vina Errazuriz became the sole owners of Caliterra, at the heart of which is the impressive 1000ha Caliterra Estate. The name Caliterra is taken from ‘Calidad’ spanish for quality and ‘Tierra’ – land. The wine making philosophy of Caliterra is to produce fruit driven quality wines. Viña Caliterra is located in the heart of Colchagua, a protected valley southeast of Lago Rapel and adjoining the Apalta Valley, 150 meters above sea level. Crucially a large proportion of this estate, and all new plantings, are on prime hillside sites resulting in high quality fruit and complex wines.
The Caliterra Edicion Limitada B blend is a little drier than the A and M blends (an Andean blend with some Malbec and a spicy Mediterranean blend with Syrah respectively). The grapes for the Caliterra Edicion Limitada B are sourced from different blocks of vines in the Caliterra vineyard. It is fermented in stainless steel and also undergoes malolactic fermentation. 62% fermented in stainless steel tanks and 38% in barrels of 3rd use at between 24-28°C. 100% aged in barrel for 18 months in 48% new French and American oak barrels.
The 2016 is a blend of Petit Verdot 41%, Cabernet Franc 38% and Cabernet Sauvignon 21%.
Caliterra Edicion Limitada B is deep and intense. This is a classic ruby-red wine made with Bordeaux grape varieties. It is fresh and elegant on the nose, with several aromatic layers. Spicy notes such as pepper, tarragon and rosemary gently give way to fruity aromas such a blueberry and sour cherries. Soft touches of roasted tomatoes complete its bouquet. On the palate, the fruitiness and smoothness of this elegant wine, which also has a rich and crispy acidity, signals a great structure and good in-bottle ageing.
