Cuvée Jean-Baptiste Winemaking
The Vineyard
The four hectares of vines at Château du Courlat are planted entirely with Merlot on sought-after clay-loam soils with traces of limestone — some of the finest terroir in the appellation for producing rich, structured Merlot with genuine ageing potential. The vines average 25 years old, old enough to deliver concentration and complexity without sacrificing freshness.
About Château du Courlat
Château du Courlat is located in Lussac-Saint-Émilion, one of the most respected satellite appellations on Bordeaux’s Right Bank, just north of Saint-Émilion itself. The Bourotte family owns the estate through their négociant house Jean-Baptiste Audy, established in 1906. The Audy family has deep roots on the Right Bank and a portfolio that includes Château Bonalgue and Clos du Clocher in Pomerol, and Château Les Hauts Conseillants in Lalande de Pomerol.
The Cuvée Jean-Baptiste is named in honour of Pierre Bourotte’s grandfather and represents the estate’s finest selection — consistently recognised as one of the appellation’s benchmark wines.
Chateau du Courlat Cuvée Jean-Baptiste has a dark, ruby red colour. On the nose there are some spicy oak notes combined with mainly red fruit (cherries). The palate is quite full, with some firm tannins, which are beginning to soften. More red fruit on the palate with some black fruit flavours, slightly reminiscent of cherry confit / kirsch. Good length.
This 100% Bordeaux is a natural match for roast lamb, duck confit, beef short rib or mushroom-based dishes. The clay-limestone terroir gives it enough freshness to work equally well with lighter game such as pheasant or guinea fowl.
How many glasses are in a 37.5cl half bottle?
A standard half bottle gives you around two generous glasses, making it ideal for one person over a meal or two people sharing a glass each.
Is this a good half bottle of wine for a gift?
Absolutely. A named cuvée from a respected Bordeaux estate in a half bottle format is an unusual and thoughtful gift — particularly for someone who appreciates fine wine but might not open a full bottle alone.
Do half bottles of wine age well?
Yes, they can be aged, depending on the wine, but bear in mind that half bottles of wine mature slightly faster than standard bottles due to the higher ratio of oxygen to wine. If you plan to cellar it, store it in cool, dark conditions.
