This is an exceptional and genuinely rare opportunity: a 3-litre Double Magnum of Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande 1995 — one of the finest vintages of the modern era from one of the most celebrated Second Cru Classé estates in Pauillac — hand-signed at the château itself by the legendary May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, who presided over Pichon Comtesse at the very height of its powers. The level is excellent, the wine is presented in its original wooden box, and the signature is a direct, personal connection to one of Bordeaux’s most formidable and charismatic proprietors. This is a collector’s piece in every sense — a wine, a provenance story, and a piece of Bordeaux history in a single large-format bottle.
Three things combine to make this Double Magnum extraordinary. First, the wine itself: the 1995 vintage at Pichon Comtesse is a classic, producing a wine of considerable depth, elegance, and ageing potential. At nearly 30 years of age in a 3-litre format — which ages more slowly and more gracefully than a standard 75cl bottle — this is approaching or at the height of its drinking window, with years of further development still ahead. Second, the format: Double Magnums of classified Pauillac are produced in very limited quantities and rarely come to the open market. Third, and most uniquely, the personal signature of May-Eliane de Lencquesaing, applied at the château, makes this a one-of-a-kind collector’s item rather than simply a rare wine. May-Eliane de Lencquesaing inherited Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande from her father, Edouard Miailhe in 1978 and proceeded to transform it into one of the most celebrated estates in all of Bordeaux. During her tenure, the estate was frequently described as a “Super Second” — a wine capable of competing with the five First Growths in great vintages — and she became one of the most recognisable and respected figures in the Médoc. Her passion for the land, for perfectionism in the vineyard and cellar, and for the tradition of the Comtesse de Lalande herself made Pichon Comtesse a byword for excellence. She sold a controlling interest to Champagne Louis Roederer in November 2006. A signature from May-Eliane de Lencquesaing on a bottle of Pichon Comtesse from her greatest era is, for serious collectors, as personal and significant as it gets.
Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande was founded in 1689 by Pierre de Mazure de Rauzan. The estate acquired its name when his daughter Thérèse received it as part of her dowry on her marriage to Jacques de Pichon Longueville, the first President of the Parliament of Bordeaux. In the celebrated 1855 Médoc Classification, Pichon Comtesse was awarded Second Cru Classé status — a ranking it has consistently overperformed since May-Eliane’s arrival.
The estate comprises 102 hectares under vine across more than 100 individual vineyard plots in the southern part of Pauillac, close to the Gironde Estuary — one of the most privileged positions in the entire Médoc. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, supported by Merlot and Cabernet Franc, giving Pichon Comtesse a distinctive richness and suppleness that sets it apart from many of its more austere Pauillac neighbours.
