Château Sansonnet is a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé wine estate. It is located at the highest point of the Saint-Émilion plateau and 1 km to the east of Saint-Émilion itself. It was given Grand Cru Classé status in 2012 which was retained in the most recent 2022 classification. The estate produces rich, opulent, Merlot-driven wines.
Château Sansonnet was once owned by Duke Élie Decazes (Prime Minister to Louis XVIII in the 19th century). It was acquired by the d’Aulan family (ex-Piper-Heidsieck) in 1999 and sold to the current owners, the Lefèvre family, in 2009.
Marie-Bénédicte Lefèvre-Leymarie (a pharmacist by training) is in charge of the chateau. After the acquisition, there was a period of major investments: vineyard replanting, purchase of new temperature-controlled stainless steel and wooden vats for parcel-by-parcel vinification and renovation of the cellars. The 2022 vintage was the first vintage vinified in a new vat room designed entirely with a view to parcel-based treatment of the crop, combined with state-of-the-art technology. A second wine called Envol de Sansonnet is also produced.
The Lefèvre family also own three other châteaux in the appellation: a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé called Château Moulin du Cadet and two Saint-Émilion Grand Cru wines called Château Soutard-Cadet and Château Harmonie.
The vineyards consist of a single 7-hectare plot surrounding the chateau and are planted on clay-limestone soils. The planting consists of 855 Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon.
Château Sansonnet 2022 is a deeply coloured, opulent Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé offering a seductive bouquet of floral notes (elderflower and herbs) intermingled with ripe black cherries, plum preserves, blackberry and subtle spice.
On the palate, it is lush, full-bodied, and intensely rich, with a delicate yet powerful attack that unfolds into silky tannins, vibrant cherry fruit, vivid freshness and a savoury, persistent finish – delivering hedonistic charm alongside elegant precision.
This wine is a perfect match for roasted or grilled red meats such as lamb chops, beef tenderloin, or entrecôte bordelaise.
Also pairs beautifully with duck confit, game like venison or pigeon, earthy mushroom dishes, or mature hard cheeses like Comté or Saint-Nectaire.
