Chateau Montlabert is a St Emilion Grand Cru wine estate located in Bordeaux. It was acquired by the Famille Castel in autumn 2008. Castel is one of the largest French wine producers and also owns Chateau Beychevelle, amongst many other Bordeaux Chateaux, and vineyards in Provence, the Loire, Languedoc, Morocco, Tunisia and Ethiopia.
Chateau Montlabert is a stone mansion that dates from the 18th century and it is located on the Libourne road next to the plateau de Figeac. Its illustrious near neighbours include Chateau Cheval Blanc, Figeac and Clos des Jacobins. There are 13 hectares of vineyards planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that have an average age of 20 to 25 years old. The soils are sandy gravel with clay.
At Chateau Montlabert a great importance is place upon careful management in the vineyard with improved drainage, cover-cropping, managing foliar evapotranspiration, plot selection, leaf thinning, green harvests and soil tillage beneath vine rows. The estate has been run according to the principles of Terra Vitis (based on the principles of sustainable agriculture, taking into account people and the environment) since the 2011 vintage.
After harvest, there is optical sorting of the berries at the winery prior to vinification. The grapes are harvested by hand and each plot of vine is harvested separately. After sorting at the winery fermentation and maceration is performed in temperature controlled stainless steel and concrete. The cepage is normally around 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and wine is aged 50% in new French oak barrels. An average of 38,000 bottles are made per vintage. The consultant winemaker at Chateau Montlabert is Hubert de Bouärd de Laforest.
Château Montlabert is an associate of the Jurade de Saint Emilion, an ancient brotherhood of wine, where it has been represented by Sophie Castel (3rd generation of the Castel family) since September 2016.
Chateau Montlabert is ruby red in colour with a glint of crimson. The nose is very typical of the Domaine’s wines, featuring powerful black fruit and vanilla with a hint of toast. Dense and full of character. Beautifully balanced, the tannins giving a very appealing structure and heralding good length on the finish.
Try with terrine of hare with foie gras and figs, roast chicken, rack of lamb, entrecôte steak in red wine, mature cheeses.
