Chiroubles, is, of course, one of the 10 Beaujolais Crus, and is made from 100% Gamay grapes. This soft, attractive Beaujolais is often described as “feminine” in character and can be served lightly chilled, particularly in the summer months.
This wine made by a co-operative called La Cave des Grands Vins de Fleurie. The co-op was founded in 1927, largely by the women of Fleurie, who has become used to working together, during and after WW1, when many of the men from the region were fighting and many would not return. Today the co-op is one of the largest producers Fleurie AC (as well as Brouilly, Chiroubles, Morgon, Moulin A Vent, Beaujolais and Beaujolais Villages) and has 330 member-winegrowers with over 350 hectares of vineyards.
Chiroubles has vineyards at some of the highest altitudes among the Cru Beaujolais. Chiroubles cru are noted for their delicate perfume that often includes aromas of violets and are lighter and more fragrant the wines of Morgon or Julienas.
This Chiroubles has a deep crimson hue with garnet hints. The nose is powerful and complex, with aromas of slightly stewed red fruit and a hint of mint. It is smooth and warm on the palate, with plump, silky tannins.
Drink with charcuterie, cold meats, pizza or young cheeses.
