Description

Domaine de Boischampt Juliénas Les 4 Cerisiers is an organic red wine from the Beaujolais cru of Juliénas. It belongs to the estate’s “Les Parcellaires” range, a collection of single-vineyard expressions sourced from meticulously chosen plots, similar to their Saint-Amour Tête de Bonnet. These are serious, terroir-driven wines that deliver impressive depth, elegance, and finesse, often rivalling the refinement found in some of the more celebrated Pinot Noirs from the Côte de Nuits.

Domaine de Boischampt: New Ownership in 2018

Domaine de Boischampt is a Beaujolais property to watch, but with a very long history – the estate was founded in 1642. Since 2018, the estate has been owned by Burgundian Antoine Romero and his partners, Yuko Matsuoka Harris and Bob Harris, an Australian-Japanese couple. The new owners straight away began transforming the domaine, and the days of producing bulk red wine came to an end.

Romero manages the estate, while the winemaker is Thibaud Baudin. Baudin, who has worked at both Domaine de la Vougeraie and Domaine d’Henri (Chablis), set about replanting the vineyards. The estate also began its organic conversion in 2019 and was certified organic in 2023.

Wines from Different Beaujolais Crus

In 2018, the estate only produced wines from two appellations: Julienas and Beaujolais Villages rouge. However, new plots were soon acquired, and today the estate produces several wines from different Beaujolais appellations, including Julienas, Fleurie, Saint Amour, Chenas and Morgon.

Based in the Village of Jullié

The estate is located in the hillside village of Jullié and comprises 14 hectares of vineyards. The vines are planted on blue stone soils, which are characteristic of Juliénas and the same as the soils in the famous Côte du Py in Morgon. Rather unusually for a wine region dominated by red wine production, the new ownership decided to also plant 3 hectares of Chardonnay. As well as this wine, they also produce three other Julienas: a Julienas AC and two “parcellaire” wines, Beauvernay and Vayolette.

Domaine de Boischampt Julienas Les 4 Cerisiers

The 100% Gamay Noir grapes for the Domaine de Boischampt Juliénas Les 4 Cerisiers come from a small vineyard plot of 0.5 hectares which is located on the granitic foothills of Haut Beaujolais.

This high vineyard is situated on a steep incline (between 20% to 45%) with a south-western exposure. The diversified granitic soil and subsoil on blue stones are of poor quality, which is great for good quality wines.

WineWiki – What is Julienas?

Julienas is one of the 10 Crus (growths). It is the most northerly of the Beaujolais cru and the vineyards are centred around the village of Julienas, thought to be named after Julius Caesar. It is considered one of the region’s more full-bodied and age-worthy wines (along with Moulin A Vent, Morgon and Chenas). The wines are noted for their richness and spice ,with aromas reminiscent of peonies.

Tasting Notes

Domaine de Boischampt Julienas Les 4 Cerisiers is a fresh and fruit-forward wine, with a structured yet elegant mouthfeel that captures the vibrant character of the cru.

It has a bright ruby red colour and bursts with juicy aromas of ripe strawberries, raspberries, cherries and subtle violet floral notes lifted by a hint of minerality.

On the palate, it delivers lively red berry fruit with good structure from fine tannins and crisp acidity, creating an elegant yet approachable mouthfeel with a touch of grippy bitterness and a clean, refreshing mineral finish.

Food Pairing

Great with charcuterie, creamy cheeses like Brie and Camembert. It is also good with roast chicken, guinea fowl or confit de canard.
